Bodice swap

Did you know you can have the bodice of a gown re-made/custom made.
We can re-use lace details if not damaged and make a new structure. A new design with details of your choice. You can have a beaded, lace or plan bodice added with or without structure lines. Zip or lace up.

A cost effective way to get your dream dress is to buy a gown that has the skirt you want. You dont need the bodice, it can be removed and replaced with an upgrade.

You can purchase a second hand gown, sale gown or online gown.

Alot of fabric goes into the skirt portion and having this custom made gets expensive. So this is a way to save and invest your money is a beautiful custom bodice that you can design yourself.

In the photo below we did a bodice swap but we used the original bodice to make a mini. Our bride got two gowns out of one.

Why should you choose us for alterations

We specialise in Bridal Alterations and we only work on wedding dresses.

We have a private fitting room so you get one on one professional service with our expert Tailor

We quote our work before starting and alway discuss any changes to our plan so there are no surprises when it come time to pay for our services.
We give estimates and time frames you just need to send us images of yourself in your gown and a description of what you want done.

We do an all over fit rather than itemised jobs.
A custom fit is more than just taking in, its addressing the shape, structure and how you want to feel in your gown.
Often gowns that are not correctly fitted will require more adjustment, that get added on to your bill (in an itemised billing system) and the price can end up being much more that you budget for.
With our fit we address all the issues and fix as much as possible in one go. This is the most cost effective way to get that high end designer fit without the price tag.

On pick up we do a training session on how best to dress the bride, do the bustles and share our knowledge.

We have an eye for detail. With a background in costume design and corest construction. We bring this into our skill set with over 16 years of bridal experience.
We also custom make gowns, giving us the ability to understand everything from measurements, paper patterns to construction in may different fabrics and styles.

We explain all options and look for the most cost effective solutions for the best fit. With multiple way of altering a gown we work with our brides to find the best ballance.
Customised fit, we can fit to different levels depending on your preferences. From a form hugging fit, to a structured firm fit with waist definition and bust shaping.

When you choose a Tailor to work on your gown.
Check reviews, past work (fit and gown diversity) and get written quotes. Make sure you ask about how pricing is structured if adjustment need to be done during the fitting process.

We can also re-style and re-size gowns.

Contact us to discuss your gown or if you have any questions.

Bust shaping

Bust shaping and why its important for that high end designer look, no matter the gowns original price.

Taking a gown in from the sides, back or both doesn't address the issue of bust shaping.

Bust shaping in a combination of correct cup sizing (with or without padding)
Taking in under the bust and curve correction.
Heat moulding after construction correction.

We can add padding as a lift or a push up with flexibility on the amount you want within the gowns construction and what looks in proportion for your figure.
We also add extra padding if you have one b**b bigger than the other so they look and fit the same in the gown.
Taking in under the bust will not only make you look slimmer but it stops your bust from moving inside the gown.
Curve correction happens when the princess seam over the bust is the wrong shape or if the structure is sewn in incorrectly.
Heat moulding is an important part of making the bust shape smooth. We dont want the Madonna look of the 80s

Depending on the style of the gown and your bust size will depend on whats best suited as far as structural support goes.
We can add underwires and boning soft cups or structured ones.
This can also be combined with a structured insert. A half or full corset
See our post about strapless gowns for more information.

When buying a gown with a see through bodice its important you have the cup matched to your skin tone or it can be changed to matching tone to the dress or stand out colour. This is something often overlooked in a gowns purchasing process but is an important part of fit so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us.

Strapless gowns

Things you need to know about purchasing a Strapless gown.

Alot of gowns with strap or sleeves that are soft, delicate or thin are not structured to hold the gown, there for are subject to the same needs as a Strapless gown.

Strapless gowns are held up from the waist with gown structure and a tight fit around the waist so they dont slip down.
Its important the structure of the gown goes down to your natural waist or longer if the structure stops short the gown will always slip down.

To the waist structure can sometimes be unflattering in some styles. This kind of structure works best for a princess cut. If the waist structure is lining up with your natural waist. The fit on this type of structure is often a bit more relaxed.

Extending the boning/structure past the natural waist by 4 inches changes how the gown fits and flows. It's a smother waist to hip line and pushes more on the tummy to give a smoother look.
This also allows for the gown to be tighter. This will give more push and lift to the bust and shape the waist in more.
Its also more comfortable while standing but less comfortable while sitting. It will keep you sitting upright as its not comfortable to sit hunched over.
It also helps with distribution of the gowns weight and is highly recommend for heavy gowns amd beaded gowns.

If a bodice is to short for your body it will need to have the structure lowered to push the gown up to sit in your natural waist. This raises the neckline.
If a bodice is to long it can be either dropped at the neckline or at the waist if it has a waist seam.
Often gowns can be to high under the arms and need to be lowered. Its important not to go to low as it will start to effect the support in the bust.

If a gown hasn't got enough structure it will wrinkle in the bodice usally on the sides.
It can also collapse in the front if the structure isn't supporting the bust correctly. This can happen after wearing the gown for a few hours. It's very important you have enough structure to last no matter how crazy your dancing gets at the reception.
Wearing under garment wont fix the issue the structure must be part of the gown to be effective.

Strapless gowns shouldn't be tight around the neckline to hold them up, this doesn't work for wedding dresses. The should be fitted so no gaps are visible but not tight.

You do not need a bra, bust support should be built into the gown, a bra just creates a gap and squashing the bust into an unfaltering shape (strapless bras especially)

Gown structure can be added in many different ways
Add more boning to a gowns, upper layer, lining or both. This can be hand sewn or machine sewn depending on the gowns original design.
Add structural fabric to the bodice to strengthen. The can be a non stretch or stretch layer depending on the original gown fabrics. This layer is designed to reduce flexibility/stretch and hold shape.
Add an additional structure layer with fabric and boning, a medium level of structure. This is a separate layer made and inserted into the gown between the upper layer and lining. This can be made from many different fabrics in any colour choice, you can match skin tone, choose a colour that blends into the gown or make a statement with a colour
Add a full corsets and sew into the gown. Its the same as above plus an extra layer of lining and more structure and this can allow the gown to go tighter and give a more shape. This often requires additional internal fasting to hold the gown in place to be able to zip or lace up.

The structure of gowns has changed over time. Gowns use to be made with multiple structural fabric layers and boning. This has been removed for easier production and as a fashion statement with see a through bodice. Structure can always be added back in to give that high end designer look.

Dont over look bust shaping this is an important part of fit. We will make another post explaining this.
