Strapless gowns
Things you need to know about purchasing a Strapless gown.
Alot of gowns with strap or sleeves that are soft, delicate or thin are not structured to hold the gown, there for are subject to the same needs as a Strapless gown.
Strapless gowns are held up from the waist with gown structure and a tight fit around the waist so they dont slip down.
Its important the structure of the gown goes down to your natural waist or longer if the structure stops short the gown will always slip down.
To the waist structure can sometimes be unflattering in some styles. This kind of structure works best for a princess cut. If the waist structure is lining up with your natural waist. The fit on this type of structure is often a bit more relaxed.
Extending the boning/structure past the natural waist by 4 inches changes how the gown fits and flows. It's a smother waist to hip line and pushes more on the tummy to give a smoother look.
This also allows for the gown to be tighter. This will give more push and lift to the bust and shape the waist in more.
Its also more comfortable while standing but less comfortable while sitting. It will keep you sitting upright as its not comfortable to sit hunched over.
It also helps with distribution of the gowns weight and is highly recommend for heavy gowns amd beaded gowns.
If a bodice is to short for your body it will need to have the structure lowered to push the gown up to sit in your natural waist. This raises the neckline.
If a bodice is to long it can be either dropped at the neckline or at the waist if it has a waist seam.
Often gowns can be to high under the arms and need to be lowered. Its important not to go to low as it will start to effect the support in the bust.
If a gown hasn't got enough structure it will wrinkle in the bodice usally on the sides.
It can also collapse in the front if the structure isn't supporting the bust correctly. This can happen after wearing the gown for a few hours. It's very important you have enough structure to last no matter how crazy your dancing gets at the reception.
Wearing under garment wont fix the issue the structure must be part of the gown to be effective.
Strapless gowns shouldn't be tight around the neckline to hold them up, this doesn't work for wedding dresses. The should be fitted so no gaps are visible but not tight.
You do not need a bra, bust support should be built into the gown, a bra just creates a gap and squashing the bust into an unfaltering shape (strapless bras especially)
Gown structure can be added in many different ways
Add more boning to a gowns, upper layer, lining or both. This can be hand sewn or machine sewn depending on the gowns original design.
Add structural fabric to the bodice to strengthen. The can be a non stretch or stretch layer depending on the original gown fabrics. This layer is designed to reduce flexibility/stretch and hold shape.
Add an additional structure layer with fabric and boning, a medium level of structure. This is a separate layer made and inserted into the gown between the upper layer and lining. This can be made from many different fabrics in any colour choice, you can match skin tone, choose a colour that blends into the gown or make a statement with a colour
Add a full corsets and sew into the gown. Its the same as above plus an extra layer of lining and more structure and this can allow the gown to go tighter and give a more shape. This often requires additional internal fasting to hold the gown in place to be able to zip or lace up.
The structure of gowns has changed over time. Gowns use to be made with multiple structural fabric layers and boning. This has been removed for easier production and as a fashion statement with see a through bodice. Structure can always be added back in to give that high end designer look.
Dont over look bust shaping this is an important part of fit. We will make another post explaining this.
