Artist talk: Photography, film, printing, art, science, magic

Bernie Cram, photographer and owner of District Darkroom

Bernie has been taking photos since the eighties, worked in tech support at Kodak in the nineties when we still made film here, worked in labs when we all still shot film, studied and worked as a graphic designer and has returned to photography running a traditional darkroom, District Darkroom, at Coburg Studios. Bernie shoots events and portraits professionally as well as running workshops for people who want to learn film developing and printing and also works on his own art photography projects.

"I describe myself as a landscape photographer, that can be a natural landscape or a human altered landscape. I see photography as a way to record and have a piece of what I find interesting. I also love the process, the precision mechanics of the camera, the beauty of the negative, the smell and the magic of developing my own work in the darkroom."

Come along and listen to a short talk about Bernie's personal photography, see lots of work that has been hand printed in the darkroom and find out why he is so enthusiastic about film photography in this digital age.

Lily is a bright and imaginative 10-year-old in Grade 5 who brings her unique ideas to life through 3D printing and hands-on crafts. With a passion for creativity and exploration, Lily designs and produces colourful 3D figures, playful toys, fidget spinners, and custom rings in a rainbow of shades and finishes. She especially loves crafting bold and expressive masks that showcase her adventurous spirit.

Whether scaling a rock wall or sketching her next design, Lily’s creativity knows no bounds. Every piece she makes—printed, painted, or assembled—reflects her curious mind and joyful energy. She’s thrilled to share her handmade creations, each made with imagination, care, and fun.
