🚨 IMPORTANT PAYMENT UPDATE FROM GOURMET GURU 🚨

From 1 October 2026, Gourmet Guru Catering will no longer accept credit card payments.

Why? 🤔

From 1st October, the rules around card payment surcharges are changing, meaning businesses will no longer be able to pass card processing costs on to customers as a separate surcharge.

For a small business like ours, those processing fees still exist — we would simply have to build them into all of our prices.

And honestly, we don't think that's fair.

Why should a customer who pays by bank transfer have to help cover the cost of someone else's credit card payment?

💳 Credit card customer → higher overall prices
🏦 Bank transfer customer → paying towards a cost they didn't incur

That doesn't sit right with us.

So rather than increasing our menu prices for everyone, we've made the decision to remove credit card payments altogether and keep our pricing as fair and transparent as possible.

We will continue to accept bank transfers, which means no card processing fees and no hidden costs.

We know this may be a little inconvenient for some customers, but we believe it's the fairest option for ALL of our customers.

🧊 FOUR YEARS AGO, WE FINALLY GOT A COOL ROOM! 😂

As we look back on the milestones, pinch-me moments and game changers that have shaped Gourmet Guru, this one definitely makes the list!

Four years ago, we had a stand-alone cool room AND freezer room built out the back of our home.

But before that, things were getting a little ridiculous! 😂

We had 11+ fridges and freezers in the garage, a three-door commercial freezer AND a portable cool room sitting in the driveway! 😳

Yep… our family home was slowly becoming a catering warehouse!

The new cool room and freezer room were a HUGE game changer. 🙌 More capacity, better organisation and another big step in growing Gourmet Guru while remaining proudly home-based.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe how far we’d already come — and how much more was still to come. ❤️

Four years on, we’re still investing, still evolving and still pinching ourselves.

Today we downed tools, stepped away from the kitchen and headed out for a team birthday lunch to celebrate 7 years since Gourmet Guru officially launched! ❤️

Seven years ago, in late 2019, our dream became a reality — and what started with just one person has grown into the business we have today.

Today’s lunch crew was Chef Sonia, Chris, Chef Darryn and Bree — enjoying some well-earned time together and, for once, letting someone else do the cooking! 😂

But our team is so much bigger than the four of us.

We are incredibly grateful for our 15+ amazing casual team members who represent Gourmet Guru at events week after week. ❤️

They are the smiling faces greeting our customers, serving our food, setting up events and helping make sure every Gourmet Guru experience is one we can be proud of.

We couldn’t do what we do without them. 🙌

❤️ SEVEN YEARS AGO TODAY, WE TOOK THE LEAP… ❤️

On 16 September 2019, Chef Sonia made a life-changing announcement:

“I have decided to finish my full-time job and concentrate on my dream!”

That dream was Gourmet Guru — a dream Sonia and Chris had been nurturing for 24 years.

After years working in hospitality, Sonia decided it was time to leave the security of her full-time role as Food & Beverage Manager for an international IT company and finally back herself.

She wrote:

“I am excited… not nervous nor worried.”

And:

“I must be a strong role model for my daughter.”

That decision became the beginning of an incredible journey.

✨ Gourmet Guru officially launched later in 2019, starting from our family’s home kitchen.

And now, almost seven years later, we’re preparing to celebrate Gourmet Guru’s 7th birthday. 🎉

What started as a dream has grown into a thriving catering business, an amazing team, thousands of events and a community of wonderful customers and supporters.

Looking back at that Facebook post today, one thing stands out:

She believed she could do it. And she did. ❤️

There have been challenges, hard work, risks and plenty of “What have we done?!” moments 😂 — but taking that leap remains one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

If there’s one thing our journey might inspire others to do, it’s this:

Believe in your dream. Back yourself. And when the time is right… take the leap. ❤️

Gourmet Guru Catering is officially a Manningham Best of Business Awards finalist in the Home-Based Businesses category! 🎉🙌

And this one means A LOT. ❤️

We started almost 7 years ago in our family’s home kitchen. Today, that kitchen has evolved into a commercially adapted home kitchen, allowing us to cater for hundreds of people every day whilst remaining proudly home-based.

Every business has a beginning. This is ours...

People often ask us how Gourmet Guru Catering came to be.

The truth is, it didn't start with a business plan or a big investment.

It started with a piece of paper.

For years, Gourmet Guru had been a dream for local residents Sonia and Chris Hocking. Sonia had spent her career as a chef, working her way through the industry to become the Food & Beverage Manager for an international IT company. She loved her job... but she had reached a crossroads.

Should she stay in the security of a successful career, or take a leap of faith and build something of her own?

One evening, Sonia sat down with Chris and wrote two columns on a sheet of paper: Pros and Cons.

They talked through every possibility, every fear and every "what if."

Then Chris asked one simple question that changed everything:

"What's the worst that can happen?"

Sonia's answer?

"I leave my secure job... and if it doesn't work out, I'll just find another one."

That was it.

The decision was made.

There were no guarantees. No promises of success. Just two people who believed that sometimes the biggest risk is never taking one at all.

That conversation around the kitchen table became the first chapter of Gourmet Guru Catering.

And looking back today... we're so glad we took the chance.

Ever wondered how long it takes to create one of our grazing tables?

From the first board going down to the final garnish, it takes approximately 1.5 hours to bring one of our grazing tables to life. 🧀🍇🥖🍓

There’s a lot that goes into it — arranging, layering, balancing colours, adding height, filling every little gap and making sure it looks just as spectacular as it tastes.

And once we’re finished?

PHOTO TIME! 📸📸📸

Because let’s be honest… when you’ve just created something this pretty, you HAVE to take loads of photos! 😂

We’re very proud of what we create, and every grazing table is a little bit different, so we love capturing the finished masterpiece before the guests dive in!

1.5 hours to create.
30 seconds for the guests to start eating it. 😂

Today we’re celebrating a very special member of the Gourmet Guru family — Chef Darryn! 🥳

Darryn joined Gourmet Guru Catering in November 2024, bringing with him an incredible 35+ years of culinary experience, a wealth of knowledge and, most importantly, a genuine love for creating beautiful food and memorable experiences. ❤️

Throughout his career, Darryn’s passion for food has taken him around the world, but what we love most is the passion and creativity he brings to every event. Darryn understands that great catering is about so much more than delicious food — it’s about creating experiences that people remember.

And, of course, we can’t forget his wicked sense of humour! 😂 There is never a dull moment when Darryn is around, and he always manages to keep the team laughing.

Darryn also has a rather questionable love for his beloved Collingwood Football Club… but don’t worry, we won’t hold that against him! 🖤🤍😂🏉
