Does sport prepare you for sport?
Not really?
Why??
Firstly specialising in just one form of training doesn’t build all round athleticism. Even at the Olympic level experts are realising those high achieving athletes show great athleticism. That is their physical prowess isn’t restricted to just one movement or skill. An Olympic swimmer climbs mountains really well, an Olympic runner can kick a footy quite well etc.
Why build athleticism at any early age?
It’s the foundation of everything. If you can’t squat, hinge, rotate, land and jump, move laterally, bound etc etc with good biomechanics your future performance will be restricted/limited in some way shape or form!!
Want to put a ceiling on your athletic potential? Don’t build athleticism
Every athlete tends to be active, they have fun going surfing, riding a bike, swimming, playing tennis, kicking a footy, climbing mountains on weekends in their spare time. If they don’t have an adequate base of all round athleticism, well their chances of injuring themselves skyrocket. These injuries keep them out of their sport.
Athleticism develops amazing spatial proprioception, balance and a vast network of neuron’s - this network of neurons helps the brain send messages around the body more efficiently and therefore helps with skill acquisition!
In summary, early specialisation doesn’t work. Spend heaps of money on your sport without spending money on your physical preparation eg investing in an S&C coach to help build athleticism, you are putting a ceiling on your potential, and increasing your chance of injury in some cases by up to 50%. Physiotherapist’s don’t mind you will be lining their pockets for years to come.
Invest in a qualified S&C coach, build athleticism, take away performance ceilings, improve your quality of life outside sport. Decrease your chances of injuries up to 50%, this will in the long game also save you money on doctors and physio bills.
