Report on sailing 15.3.26 at BYC

A bright and light wind day gave the green fleet excellent conditions on Sunday morning. A dozen boats joined in for some starting practice and simulated racing. Lots of good sailing with Hainsy winning the first race and Patricia the second. Lots of great fun.

The afternoon saw the Eric Szabo memorial with two back to back races led by our RO for the day John Mills.
Keel boats were away first with a pursuit format in a beautiful 10 knot SSE breeze.
The dinghies followed with 15 Sabres along with a Sharpie, Heron and Pacer to give a great fleet for the memorial event.
John Ceruty was the first to top mark with Chris and Dan on his heels. John got rolled by both down the first reach and that is how they finished with Chris holding a small lead till the finish.
Race 2 had the wind backing to SE before the start meant that those who went right off the start missed the slow shift to the left. John Ceruty was leading but missed seeing the new top mark to the east and continued upwind on port to find the fleet had peeled off left. Dan was first around followed by Matt W. with Jason and Shane close behind. The sloppy waves coupled with the shift to the east meant the waves were near on the bow so it payed to power up, go lower and punch through the slop. On the run to the finish Dan and Matt W. had a neck and neck battle to the line with Matt just a fraction in front at the finish.
That left 3 boats tied on 5 points- Chris, Matt and Dan with Matt winning on a countback.
A great atmosphere back at the club with keelboat and dinghy crews mingling at the free BBQ kindly donated by Andrew Szabo.
As usual, Andrew had plenty of spot prizes for sailors and volunteers alike with BYC chipping in with vouchers.
Overall the day was a fitting memorial to Eric and the memories we have of him as a dinghy sailor, keel boat crew ,club volunteer and all round inspiration to those who knew him.
Matt.

2026 Sabre State Championships

The 2026 Sabre State Championships have been completed today following the three races sailed last weekend at the 2026 Banjo’s Shoreline Crown Series Bellerive Regatta, with Sunday racing abandoned due to wild weather.

Three consecutive races were held today with Matthew Pilkington (For Sail) taking out the title on 8 points, in second place Richard Parker (Courtesy Tap) on 15 points, and rounding out the podium was Chris Boon (Naked) on 17 points.

Other winners included:

1st on handicap – Chris Keil (TBA)

Women – Jo-Anne Verrier (Apisca II)

Junior – Grady Frith (Zahir)

Senior – Richard Bingham (Sparkles)

Thank you to the series ROs Nick Hutton and Jimmy Thorpe, and all the on-water volunteers that assisted on the start boat, mark laying, and rescue boats. They all did an outstanding job in some challenging conditions.

Thank you to BYC for hosting the championship.

A big thank you to Walker Sails and PJs Ship Chandlers for their generous help with prizes.

Race 5 in the Nibbs Electrical Summer Series was held on Friday evening in a somewhat challenging ENE wind. Despite that it was a very pleasant night for a sail. It was good to have 'Xcite and 'Dark & Stormy' join in. Also 'Hydrotherapy' paid a visit.

Report from Matt on Sunday’s proceedings…

What a great turn out of dinghies . We had 19 boats on the water with a new Tackers group out for their third sail. Green fleet had 4 Sabots and 4 Optis with the Fee family all having a go along with 5 sabres.
Perfect weather meant everyone had a big smile and a great atmosphere pervaded the rigging area.

In the afternoon we had 11 Sabre in a short course series with our RO James fitting in 4 tight races. There were plenty of close finishes. Small 10 degree wind shifts were the order of the day so using them made all the difference. Overall Chris Boon won the series with plenty of first places. Dan Followes was second with brother Jason in third- (no rivalry there haha). Stephen won the handicap division on a countback from Jo with only two points separating the first 5 boats- excellent handicapping from Chris Sheehan.
Next weekend is the Crown Series. Get your entries in for a great regatta as well as the Sabre State Titles.

Race 4 in the Nibbs Electrical Summer Series was sailed last Friday 13th February which was lucky for some but not others. There was virtually no wind at the start but later on there were 30 knot gusts that made crews work a bit harder. 'Reflection' took line honours and the handicap will with 'Bahloo' and 'Pinta' taking out second and third place respectively.

Two pennant races scheduled with a gusty W to SW forecast. 8 Sabres fronted up for a tricky day on the water. start boat had over 30 from the west as they waited for fleet to get to start area. A windward leeward course was set as it was so flukey and limited human resource to keep changing the course. About a minute before the start wind goes light and left leaving boats struggling to lay the start on Stbd. Richard did best there and was up towards the pin at the start. The fleet flipped onto port with Chris Boon near last and to leeward of the fleet. In a flicky breeze being to leeward is not so bad as the next shift to the right gives you leverage over the fleet and so it transpired with Chris hauling them back in quickly and then grabbing the shifts as they came to be first at top mark. Matt and Dan were swapping spots for second and third. Shane was unlucky near the top mark and managed to capsize which put him back a touch. Downwind the shifts were no less and the three front markers extended their lead to the finish after three laps. Chris had enough lead at the finish to win on time and handicap.
A big cell crossing to the south bent the wind to the south and even east so race 2 was postponed till windward mark and start were reset. By the time everything was sorted the wind was clocking back to SW and with not enough resources to chase it the racing was abandoned for the day. That turned out to be a smart move as it kicked in big time from the west not long after. Matt Pearce was lucky to not have his mast punch down through the deck as a side stay saddle had failed and left the mast wobbling dangerously. This has happened to other boats previously so swapping two bolts and a saddle seems smart maintenance.
Matt.
