I took a delightful trip to Kulin on Friday, where it all began for The Flower Farmacy. I reunited with my beautiful flower sister, Gen and we surprised Heather and Megsy at Kulin Tyre Services with some beautiful blooms as they roll into retirement after 38 and a half years!

This iconic duo were the first smiling faces we encountered on day one of TFF opening, they delivered our first box of flower freight with a whistle, some laughter and all the good wishes under the sun for our new venture, so it was only fitting to be there on their last day with a bunch of flowers, hand delivered just for them and to wish them all the very best for their next venture.
Happy retirement Heather and Megsy. XX

LIBBY + FROU FROU ROSE
Libby Sippe, Albany WA

It’s an artists world; we’re just living in it.

All of the colours and shapes and textures and light and movement in the world and most don’t even notice; but to an artist, there is beauty everywhere. It’s something Albany artist, teacher, mother and grandmother Libby Sippe has always found, whether it be a child discovering something new, raising her three sons, Albany‘s rugged and relentless coastline or her own wondrous, breathtakingly beautiful garden.

Libby radiates with happiness and hope, a genuine gentle person with a warm heart and caring nature, it’s no wonder all who meet her are overcome with the strong urge to cuddle her and then possibly adopt her forever. So what do you send such an avid and experienced gardener, who definitely knows her peonies from her pincushions? Frou Frou Roses of course, a unique type of rose that has been associated with elaborate decoration, with frills and ruffles and an unrivalled natural beauty.

‘My love of art and my ability to draw goes back as far as I can remember. I was simply always drawing. I still recall my first year at school being reprimanded by my teacher who decided my highly detailed attempt to draw the sun was not correct, and I was very much in trouble for not following her instructions! It was always my intention to follow an artistic career, however I ultimately chose teaching which I never regretted. My teaching career led me to country postings and I ended up in Albany where I met my husband-to-be. I have loved my life farming with him. We were able to bring up our three sons on the land (and near the ocean) with a real appreciation of country life and the privileges it offers.’

‘The hardest thing about retiring from teaching in 2015 was missing the daily contact with the children. I now tend to consider myself an artist, although I have never promoted myself in a big way to the public, but after several successful exhibitions I’m fortunate to have achieved a following of people who enjoy what I do. My artist inspiration comes from my surroundings and the natural beauty of our southern coastline. I treat my camera as my notebook and return to my studio to sketch ideas from photos and memory. My paintings are often a challenge in problem solving of how to get certain effects like capturing morning and evening light.’

‘My most treasured possession (apart from my family and friends) would have to be my garden. I would feel stifled without one, and my garden is a bit of a reflection of my life - creative, impulsive, mistakes made, but grown with love. What I love most about it is the constant reward it offers me. It’s a place to wander, enjoy quiet times or share it with friends, bringing birds, insects and beauty into my life; I absolutely love it!’

🌹 my hidden talent… I haven’t found one yet, and if I did, it wouldn’t be hidden!
🌹 happiness is… appreciating all the things I’m grateful for every day.
🌹 I get grumpy when… I have to do housework and not the things I truly love.
🌹 the smell of fresh flowers makes me… think of times and places of my past, and how lucky I am to have them to enjoy.
🌹 words of wisdom… be kind, be respectful, be humble, be honest and treat everyone as you’d wish to be treated.

AMANDA + ‘FREEDOM’ RED ROSE
Amanda Milton, Lake Grace WA

There is an old proverb that suggests if you want something done, who should ask a busy person. And boy, has this week been busy with the most delightful task of searching, foraging and fossicking across our spectacular state looking for yet another beautiful bloom to add to our ‘Flowers of the Farmacy’ arrangement.

But during this week’s floral adventure, we discovered that we might just have to rewrite that proverb to say: “If you want something done, and done to the most amazing standard, then you should actually ask Amanda Milton.”

Amanda’s relentless pursuit to make the world and her community a better place, inspired our resident Farmacists to populate, calculate and formulate a meticulously researched and peer reviewed plan to send her a bunch of stunning red roses in recognition of her relentless passion to do any job (paid or volunteer) to the highest standard possible.

“I am a Queenslander, born and raised in Ipswich to parents from peanut country in the Kingaroy District. My Parents had very strong community values. Dad was a master of everything, and from him I will try my hand at anything, from welding to mechanic's to construction to machine operation etc.”

Amanda was educated in Dinmore before completing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Rural Technology at the University of Queensland. This enabled her to work for both large corporate and family owned farms in NSW at Collarenebri, Moree and the New England Tableland near Armidale, mainly working with broadacre irrigated cotton, cattle, grain crops and superfine merinos.

In 1994 Amanda decided to head West after scoring a gig at the Lake Grace Department of Agriculture Office, having been recruited by fellow Bananalander Steve Curtin, the Officer in Charge at the time.

Amanda spent two years working in Lake Grace for the department focusing on promoting the resurgence of canola as a crop in WA. She then moved to Northam to become the specialist extension officer of the "Time to Lime" campaign as part of a multi agency approach to addressing acid soils in broad-acre agriculture in WA. Both of these innovations have had a profound impact on WA farm profitability since.

“In Dec 1999 I was asked to come back to Lake Grace as the District Manager responsible for the Lake Grace Office and the Newdegate Research Station at age 29. I ended my career with the Department in 2005 when my husband and I went full time farming. Our farm is 10,000 acres which is a hobby farm around here these days, but it has kept us very busy with just the two of us and we were also caring for my father in law.”

A burst appendix in 2018 was followed by a diagnosis of thyroid cancer. So in 2020 after winning that battle, Amanda started a new career as a Real Estate Agent with Elders, using her agronomic, management and people skills to help people buy and sell property as their circumstances change.

Amanda’s credentials and list of achievements have literally blooming blown us away!

😍She holds bronze, silver and gold in the Duke of Edinbourgh awards.
😍She has represented Queensland in Women’s Cricket both at under age and senior level, and has played cricket in many men's and women's teams across Qld, NSW and WA.
😍Has been a Justice of the Peace in NSW and WA for over 20 years.
😍She has been a member of St John Ambulance for 17 years as a volunteer and a trainer. In 2017 after 5 years of planning and fundraising, Amanda project managed the construction of the St John WA facility in Lake Grace. An $850,000 project that the community were told was unachievable .
😍She is a member of the Local Health Advisory Committee and the District Health Advisory Committee.

🌹Complete these sentences:
- My hidden talent is… puppeteering. I have always loved marionettes, Muppet type puppets and all manner of handmade puppets.
- I’m always surprised by…the strength of people to achieve the impossible.
- Happiness is…being true to yourself and making active decisions about the direction of your life.
- The smell of fresh flowers … renews the soul
- The world needs more…random acts of kindness or thoughtfulness

🌹What is your favourite flower? Sunflowers. You cannot help but smile when you see them, and entire paddocks of them is simply stunning.
🌹If you were a flower, what would you be? I would have to say an Iris as this is my middle name. It is a family name - my grandmother, mother, cousin etc all have it.
🌹Principals to live by? Understand that you are unique (don't be constrained by "normal") and you can achieve anything. Always 'give something a go". Always look for one thing every day that is a random act, pick up that piece of rubbish, open that door, help someone change a tyre, the little things count in life.

CLARE + PEONIES
Clare Leake, Kellerberrin WA

Peek-a-boo! We see yoooou, you big fabulous Flower Farmacy Friday! Come on in here for a cuddle, and by jingoes don’t we all need one!

And do you know what else we need? A dose of happiness in human form, which is why our virtual gift to you this afternoon is this ray of shimmering sunshine, Clare Leake. Yep. *smug little us* You’re so welcome.

Effortlessly fabulous, chic, clever and cool, Clare radiates a warm and calm aura that envelops all those lucky enough to connect with her. Part owner of the gorgeous Kellerberrin storefront and online store ‘The Dust Merchant’, a mother of three beautiful children and also running their family farming business, Clare is a blissful and busy lady.

We wanted to brighten her day by sending some rich red peonies into her arms, symbolising love, passion, honour and respect.

‘I grew up on a beautiful family farm in Borden in The Great Southern. Prior to moving to Kellerberrin in 2016, I pursued a career in banking and corporate advisory before moving to the farm to start a family with my husband. We have three young children, a gaggle of pets and a garden that I am forever trying to expand. This time last year, amidst the chaos of babies and harvest and the ups and downs of life, myself and two friends Georgie and Sarah launched The Dust Merchant. We curate a range of beautiful wares for women, home and family and we specifically tailor our range to regional women. We want to bring beautiful yet functional pieces to the Wheatbelt and beyond. I'm super excited that from next week we will be showcasing some spectacular, orignal artworks (commissioned by two clever artist friends).’

🌺 what are you most passionate about? A healthy lifestyle - our bodies are such incredible machines and looking after them is something we take for granted. I would also like to see more opportunities and support for regional women! The country can be such a wonderful place to live and we as women have so much to offer, yet I feel there are some very real challenges that still need to be improved before we can really thrive.

🌺 what’s surprised you the most about a) The Dust Merchant; b) Motherhood? TDM - The sense of community our little shop has provided me. We have been so well supported by communities, near and far! Motherhood - The pure joy that children's laughter brings. But also how much support you need to raise a child.

🌺 complete these sentences:
- my hidden talent is… cooking without a recipe.
- happiness is…moments spent with friends, family, in the garden, our shop and at the beach.
- I get grumpy when…I haven't had enough fresh air - I am very much an outdoors person!
- the smell of fresh flowers … is happiness and sunshine and love combined. Flowers are the perfect gift for every occasion.
- the world needs more…connected communities - when we feel part of a community we are so much more compassionate and motivated and that leads to great outcomes.

🌺 what is your favourite flower? Why? I love tulips but right now, I cant go past Geraldton Wax. Those vibrant violet flowers are prolific, delicate and lasting - they have brightened my house and shop for weeks!

🌺 if you were a flower, describe yourself? I'd like to be planted in a mixed bed with plenty of variety - blooms in Spring and definitely not frost resistant. I would NOT drop my leaves because raking them is a thankless task!

🌺 principals to live by? I try to find the brightness in things! 'and when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it' Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist.

ELISE + RANUNCULUS
Elise Mullan, Dudinin WA

A thread is just a simple thread. It never seems like anything significant.

That is, until it is threaded through a needle, then woven, over and over again, bringing two separate and individual pieces together and binding them into a new strong and unique work of art. Weaving, joining, shaping and creating a rich tapestry and new chapter to a story, each and every time the thread weaves its magic.

Elise Mullan knows the value of thread, of holding it all together with a strong stitch and a whole lot of love. She is the very clever and creative founder of Mullan Grubs, a boutique sewing business that sells gorgeous handmade clothing for children of all ages and stages. Married to a farmer and raising their children on their Dudinin property in the Wheatbelt of WA, Elise spent her early adult years as a hairdresser, before reigniting her love of sewing.

A kind, elegant, generous and utterly gorgeous flower, (precisely the type we like to pick for our ever-growing Friday Flower Farmacy posy) Elise brims with creativity and a caring nature. We wanted to share some of that kindness and beauty with her, placing a bunch of radiant ranunculus into her very clever hands. It has been said that ‘if ranunculus blooms were people, we imagine they’d be the elegant, charming type, who are gracious and hospitable. They throw the best dinner parties and make it look effortless,’ just like everything Elise turns her hand to.

‘I was born and raised in Pingelly and left school after completing year 10 to become a hairdresser in Perth. I worked in salons in Pingelly and Narrogin, (which is where I met my husband waaaaay back in 1999) then ran my own salons in Pingelly, Wickepin and Kulin before having kids.’

‘I’ve always loved to sew, and somewhere in amongst my babies arriving, my little online baby ‘Mullan Grubs’ was created. Sewing is a great form of therapy for me - unfortunately 2021 has had other plans for me and I’ve been having some major sewing withdrawals. Luckily I’m keeping busy working at a fabulous little cafe (Acres of Taste, in Kulin) which makes up for all of that!’

🧵 Something people might not know about you? I was a regional finalist for the Young Rural Ambassador (aka Miss Showbag between friends!)

🧵 What’s the most memorable or special Mullan Grubs piece you have created and why? Each new creation feels like my favourite, I honestly love them all… although a few certain fabrics have been declared ‘never again’ on my sewing list! What makes them even more special is when I see them being worn and loved. I get a buzz seeing my creations out and about, even better when they’ve been worn and loved, then passed on to be worn and loved again and again as hand me downs ❤️

Complete these sentences…
🧵 The world needs more… kindness.
🧵 I never… go to bed early enough!
🧵 my heart sings when… my kids are happy - when they’re truly happy you can feel it, and it feels wonderful!
🧵 happiness is… simple. Look for what you have, not for what you don’t.
🧵 farmers love to… farm! Dedicated farmers are amazing! They work hard, all day every day. There’s always something pressing, but to see them work hard and love their work is inspiring.

🧵 Favourite flower - what is it and why? ‘Ranuncs’ are one of my favourites, I love all the fluffy layers & their tall stems. Poppies, Peonies & Lysianthums are also up there in my top 10.

🧵 Describe what type of flower you’d be?
I’d probably be a succulent!! I’m pretty independent & fairly low maintenance 😆

🧵 Words of advice or principals to live by?
Be kind, you never know what others are going through 🪡
