That tiny pocket in your jeans was originally created to safeguard a cowboy's most prized possession. 🤠

Back in the late 1870s, Levi Strauss & Co. added this small pocket to their popular "waist overalls," which were the precursor to modern blue jeans.

At the time, pocket watches were essential for men, especially rugged workers like cowboys, miners, and railroad hands.

Standard pockets were too large and loose, leaving these valuable timepieces vulnerable to being scratched, broken, or lost during a hard day's work.

Levi's solution was this small, snug pocket, designed specifically to keep a watch secure and protected.

Interestingly, while many people now call it the "fifth pocket," that's not historically accurate. The original jeans had four pockets: two in the front (plus the watch pocket) and one in the back.

The real fifth pocket was the second back pocket, which Levi's added to their jeans around 1901. The small one has always been the watch pocket. 🕰️

During World War II, Levi's even had to temporarily remove the metal rivets from the watch pocket to conserve materials for the war effort.

Even though most people now carry phones instead of pocket watches, this small piece of history has remained a standard feature on jeans for over 150 years.

Before astronaut John Glenn would orbit the Earth in 1962, he made a specific request. 🚀

He refused to trust the new IBM electronic computers completely for his flight calculations.

Glenn said, "Get the girl to check the numbers. If she says they’re good, then I’m ready to go.”

That "girl" was Katherine Johnson, a brilliant mathematician working for NASA.

Born in 1918, Johnson was a prodigy, graduating high school at 14 and college at 18. She was originally hired in 1953 as a "human computer" in a segregated unit of African-American women who did all the complex math by hand.

Her reputation for accuracy was so profound that she was the final word on the calculations for the trajectory of the Friendship 7 mission. She worked for days, verifying every number for the orbital flight that would make John Glenn a national hero.

Her work didn't stop there. Johnson's calculations were also critical for the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969 and the Space Shuttle program. 🧠

For decades, her work and the work of her colleagues went largely unrecognized by the public. In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, finally receiving national acclaim for her essential role in the space race.

Katherine Johnson passed away in 2020 at the age of 101, leaving behind a legacy of quiet excellence and groundbreaking achievement. 🇺🇸
