During a visit to the Port Moresby Grammar School in August I learned from the Principal that the school had a beautiful library, but no library books. In her words, “books are hard to come by in PNG”.
Confident we could assist the school, Kariong Somersby Rotary Club implemented the ‘Library Books for Port Moresby Grammar School’ project … and reached out to the community to help us with books suitable to the education of K - Y12 students.
The response from the community has been beyond all expectations. The project goal was to provide 6,000 books.
In the past week 4 shipping pallets, containing 13,082 books left Phillip House in Kariong, bound for the students and staff at Port Moresby Grammar School. The school’s Principal is overwhelmed !
On behalf of our Rotary Club, I extend sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone in the community who contributed to this magnificent outcome … friends, neighbours, teachers, librarians, schools and others.
Books are still flowing into Phillip House and it is with some regret that we have to call time on this great project. The school will now have the books it needs, with some to spare.
As unusual (and ungrateful) as it may seem, we are respectfully asking the community not to bring anymore books to Phillip House.
Once again, to everyone concerned …. THANK YOU for your magnificent contribution to the educational welfare of the students at Port Moresby Grammar School.
Kind regards,
Paul Carroll
