Shades of Punk

Shades of Punk All the subgenres of Punk music; from skate-punk to ska-punk, emocore to metalcore on 897FM Perth!

Shades of Punk is a community radio show on 89.7FM in Perth, Western Australia. Having grown up on huge punk names like Green Day, The Offspring, Blink 182, Pennywise, Sum 41, and more, the show aims to cover all the sub-genres of punk - from ska-punk to skate punk; from emocore to metalcore, and everything in between!

How's this? I've been off the air for a solid year and I'm late to my own return promo. Shades of Punk returns to 89 7FM Perth on Thursday 23rd April.

Featuring new tracks from a bunch of fantastic Australian artists that are too young to even have pages. Let's just promote it as a surprise!

I've also got a 75 yr old, stock sound effect that's been released again very recently... wait, that's wrong. I dunno, something about William's German scream?

Anyway, I'm back. Thur 23/04 @ 8pm (UTC+8). Get on board (sometimes I'm more competent than my FB posts)!

If you ever felt influenced by the idea of 'nominative determinism', remember that the lead singer of Fall Out Boy is named Patrick Stump.

Hello stranger! The hiatus was significantly(!) longer than I'd hoped, but Shades of Punk is returning to the airwaves in the near future. Stay tuned for a return date!

Before that, though, you can catch me filling in, over the next three weeks, for Dave Elliott and his very excellent One Step Beyond Ska Show!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I'll be diving into third-wave ska and its evolution through ska-punk across my time in the big chair.

Hopefully you can join me as I shake the rust off and remember how to press the right buttons - 8-10pm Wednesdays on 89 7FM Perth (thru to Apr 8th).

My last show in a good while was a lot of fun. Thanks to Dave Elliott and Tony D'Souza for sharing the show with me.

I could have easily spent a month playing my favourite tracks from across the show's journey. Even the short-short-list for Thursday's show was culled for time (by half-a-dozen tracks!).

I want to send particular love to Came Out Swingin', The Decline, Ellen May, All Hope Remains, JUDO CHOP, The Distained, and Pretty Uglys for giving time to the show over its current run.

Until I get back I just encourage everyone to try and find music you've not heard before, whether it's new or contemporary to your favourite bands. This website is a great place to start:

Yep, I'm aware I've been quiet for a little while. Full transparency -- as a volunteer presenter, I've been struggling to give Shades of Punk the time it deserves for a couple of months now.

Listeners will know I've had no more time available than to drop playlists over the last couple of weeks; I've recently missed prior episodes as well, against my will.

Thursday July 5th is going to be my last show for a good while (we're talking months). For that reason, I want to make it part retrospective, part appreciative, and part anticipatory. I do plan to be back when I get a bunch of other s**t under control.

Next Thursday I'll play a selection of tracks that represents what Shades of Punk has tried to be for the last two & a half years, and pay tribute to the people that have made it more than it would have been without them.

One or two of my favourite 89 7FM announcers will join me to celebrate the show and I hope you do, too.

8-10pm on Thursday; 89 7FM Perth

I'm not able to be in studio tomorrow night, but I've procured the very excellent services of 89 7FM's own Tony D'Souza from The GOATS Radio Show to cover for me!

I have no idea what he's planning, but it really is GOAT I'm out of a job! Shades of Punk, with guest presenter Tony D'Souza, 8pm tomorrow night on 89 7FM Perth.

Are you neurodivergent curious? Listen on demand to a radio presenter that screwed up his ADHD medication schedule and then presented a two-hour show (the music is really good, by the way)!
