All it took was a simple convo at the end of a shift, to gain a mate.

🤝 When Eamon started a new job, he felt like the outsider.
But one small moment — Toby reaching out — made all the difference.

This is what Loneliness Awareness Week (4–10 August) is all about. It’s a national movement to shine a light on loneliness, especially in young people, and remind us that connection starts small.

A compliment. A shared joke. An awkward hello.
These small moments matter — and they can change someone’s day.

🎥 Watch Toby & Eamon share how their friendship started with one small moment.

đź’¬ Have you ever been the new one?
đź’ What helped you feel seen or included?
👇 Share your story or tag someone who made a moment matter for you.

Being the “most connected generation” doesn’t mean we always feel it.

You don’t need a best friend or a big crew to feel less lonely.

Loneliness Awareness Week is on this week; 4th - 10th of August 2025.

Sometimes, connection starts with something small — an awkward hello, a shared laugh, a compliment, or just knowing someone sees you. These moments might seem tiny, but they matter. They can be the start of something real.

More than 2 in 5 young Australians say they feel lonely — and that loneliness sticks around longer than most people realise. But when young people have welcoming spaces, free or low-cost activities, and support through life changes, it makes a huge difference.

👉 Swipe through to see what young people are saying about loneliness — and what actually helps them feel connected.

This week, we’re inviting everyone to make moments that matter — at home, at school, at work, or wherever you are.

đź’¬ Do you agree with what helps young people connect?
đź’ How would you describe loneliness in your own words?

Let’s talk. Your voice matters.

🚀 Spotlight on YAP: Youth Assistance Program 🧠💼
We’re all about helping young people find their spark—and HBNC’s Youth Assistance Program (YAP) is doing just that!

Are you (or someone you know) aged 15–17 and feeling stuck when it comes to finding a job, heading back to school, or figuring out what’s next?

💬 YAP offers free, one-on-one support that’s all about you. Need help writing a resume? Want someone to go with you to drop off a job application? Looking for a confidence boost to talk to an employer? YAP’s got your back.

Since kicking off, YAP has helped over 170 young people take real steps towards work, training, or study. It’s about being heard, feeling supported, and taking charge of your future—your way.

💡“We believe young people thrive when they are heard, supported and empowered,” says Sheenah Heinonen, HBNC’s Service Manager. “Our role is to walk alongside them as they grow in confidence.”

👉 Get involved: Referrals can come through your school, a youth or community service, or you can reach out directly to Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre.

📍 Open to eligible 15–17-year-olds in the Hervey Bay region.

📸 YAP team members Ian, Gabi and Josh.
