Why Choose an Elopement Wedding?
An elopement wedding is often thought of as secretly running away to get married without telling anyone. But the meaning of an elopement has changed over time.
Today, an elopement means getting married in a simple, more intimate way, often with just the couple or a small group of people. It’s about celebrating your love in a relaxed and personal setting.
One of the best things about an elopement is the freedom to choose your ceremony location. Elopements can happen just about anywhere – in nature, at a public park, on the beach, at someone’s home, or even on a family member’s property. The possibilities are endless!
While some couples invite their closest family or friends to join them, many elopements are very small.
In these cases, the couple, the Authorised Marriage Celebrant, two witnesses, and a photographer (who can also act as one of the witnesses) are all that’s needed.
The ceremony is still a legal one. Your Authorised Marriage Celebrant will guide you through the process, and you’ll sign all the necessary legal documents to officially make your marriage recognised under Australian law.
Elopement weddings give couples full control over their special day. With fewer people involved, you won’t have to worry about trying to please everyone. You can wear whatever you like, decide whether or not to have a reception, and even plan the event on shorter notice or well in advance.
A completed Notice of Intended Marriage form must be given to your chosen celebrant, signed in their presence, with all required Identification, at least one month before the wedding and no earlier than 18 months beforehand.
Ultimately, though an elopement is all about your commitment to each other.
It removes the financial and social pressures often associated with big weddings, letting you focus on what really matters—your love for one another.
