Some very interesting facts on the ODE of REMEMBRANCE. Take the time to have a read.

THE ODE of REMEMBRANCE

Referred to as: The Ode, has been read at commemorative services in Australia since 1921, expressing the nation’s collective feelings of respect and loss for the service people who gave their lives during World War I, and in all conflicts since.

They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the
sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

The Ode comes from For the Fallen, a poem by English poet and writer Laurence Binyon. The poem was first published in The Times on 21 September 1914. It was later published in the Winnowing Fan - Poems of the Great War.

By mid-September 1914, less than seven weeks after the outbreak of war, the British Expeditionary Force in France had already suffered severe casualties. Long lists of the dead and wounded appeared in British newspapers. It was against this background that Binyon wrote For the Fallen.

The Ode is the fourth stanza of the poem. The verse, which became the League Ode, was already used in association with Anzac Day commemoration services in Australia in 1921.

Such an inspiring man. A huge loss to the world. A huge loss to the medical and scientific communities. Rest in Peace.

My fellow Australians,

I pen this letter as a final goodbye to all those I have had the immense privilege of loving, sharing life’s adventures with, working alongside and meeting during what can only be described as a life filled with happiness, optimism, opportunity and passion.

My intention is for this letter to be published upon my passing - as my final farewell.

I cannot thank my beautiful wife Katie and my adored children Emily, Matthew and Lucy enough for their love, their support, their strength, and their compassion. They are shining examples of the best of humanity and make me extremely proud.

To my research and clinical colleagues, I implore you to stay inquisitive and brave and keep striving to break new ground.

To all cancer patients, I encourage you to consider enrolling in research and clinical trials, if on offer.

And to government and the wider community, please keep funding science and medical research. This is the most impactful way that you too can make a difference.

Perhaps the greatest lesson to come from these last three years is that cancer does not define us. It may be the current road we are travelling, but it is not our entire journey.

A terminal cancer diagnosis does however provide clarity as to what truly matters. It shines a spotlight on the importance of relationships, on true friendship and on selflessness.

If my legacy was to continue beyond these words, I would be delighted and humbled to be remembered as a proud everyday Aussie who “gave it a crack”, and in doing so, inspired others to pursue their dreams and passions with humility, love and compassion.

I had a really great day meeting peoe who absolutely adore their fur children. So many gorgeous kitties.

Chatted with people about pet namings (same as baby naming ceremonies) which are perfect for children when welcoming a new animal into the family.

I also chatted about that hardest time when our pets leave this world and how they should be farewelled in a beautiful way to memorialise them. ❤️
