I saw Soulwax 5 times live from 2006 to 2008 and thought this joy would continue forever. Little did I know I was spoilt rotten, as rotten as Soulwax disgusting synth sounds, gross in the best possible way. Then year after year passed and they never returned to Australia. After 18 years of longing I knew it was up to me to make it happen. Watching their evolution into 3 drummers with Transient Program and From Deewee, then All Systems Are Lying footage, if I missed this I may never forgive myself. Portola announced them and I dreamed of a headline show, then all of a sudden they announced Thursday at The Regency Ballroom. In less than half a day I changed my flight to Thursday.
The Regency show was incredible, the euphoria and joy to finally be in front of them again. Looking at Dave and Steph on their new controllers and synths, Stef on bass and synths, LaimaLeyton on synths and vocals, then the lineup behind them of three insane drummers, Big_Baby_Blake , ⛓IGGOR CAVALERA⛓ and Aurora Bennett The lighting production was out of this world.
Starting with their tribute to Kavinsky and Nightcall into Do You Want to Get Into Trouble, the set list continued to build. We got a taste of From DEEWEE , Nite Versions and a whole lot of All Systems Are Lying with classic samples and remixes always in between. Highlights like Krack threw the whole body around, E Talking, and Gimme a Reason with the most insane drop I have ever heard live. Then the encore to blow the real fans away: Idiots in Love, False Economy and something truly special, 1999’s Conversation Intercom, beefed up and the perfect finish.
Then onto Saturday night at Portola , competing against Dogblood and Prospa, they knew they had to go big for all who chose them. The high was incredible yet bittersweet as it was over, we could have lived in that moment forever.
It was unexplainable, the above does it no justice to the emotions felt, top tier moment of my life. They are the best in the world and I am finally fulfilled, let’s just hope it’s not another 18 years before I see them again…
