Gosh I enjoyed this conversation…I think it was made extra special as we were able to record in-person which I haven’t been able to do since 2020.
Whilst holidaying in Australia, Adam Bannister visited relatives in Wagga Wagga, met the lovely Melinda, and luckily for Wagga Wagga (and regional Australia), they fell in love, got married and decided to stay put. Adam founded Pyrus Event Services in 2016 and very quickly built a name for himself as the go-to person when it comes to event technology consultancy and production management services.
In March 2020, like many working in the events industry, Adam’s work was nearly completely wiped out. Not one to sit around and mope, he saw an opportunity to change up his business offering and has been at the forefront of adapting to a virtual and hybrid way of delivering events ever since.
Pyrus are strong proponents for inclusion and are dedicated to ensuring ease of access for all participants at events. Pyrus has also recently launched a new product, Pyrus Connect, that better connects access technologies to virtual, hybrid & live events.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Adam on numerous occasions since 2017 and he is the best in the business.

The Woodford Folk Festival would usually be wrapping up another event at this time each year. Whilst the event looked a little different this year, they still managed to hold Bushtime.

The Woodford festival experience is deep, rich and colourful. It is based on a vision of inclusive and creative community, culture and tradition passed through generations, expressed through story and ceremony. The site, a former barren dairy farm, has been lovingly regenerated with over 120,000 subtropical rain forest trees, orchids, ferns and sedges, planted to create a habitat for butterflies and wildlife.

Woodfordia is transformed into a village that hosts over 25,000 daily patrons, performers, stallholders, volunteers and organisers. As many as 2,680 volunteers across 162 departments are at the heart of the organisation and contribute to the setup and day-to-day running of the festival. During the event, the festival is actually the 67th largest town in Australia.

Each year construction begins in early December and continues up until Christmas Day. Over 450 contractors and volunteers build the village.

Bill Hauritz AM is the Founder & Executive Director of the Woodford Folk Festival and is my guest on this episode of Eventualities. Take a listen here https://shows.acast.com/eventualties 🎤🎧

The Lismore Lantern Parade is an annual community event held on or around the longest night of the year, being the Winter Solstice.

The event attracts approximately 30,000 people each year and has been formally recognised by Lismore City Council as its signature event.

Each year the Lantern Parade involves participants from Lismore, throughout the Northern Rivers and visitors to the region who have attended workshops in lantern, mask and costume making. School and community workshops start at Easter each year with many other volunteers travelling from across the country to participate in this event.

LightnUp Inc are the producers of the Lismore Lantern Parade and run year round programs and workshops throughout regional, rural and metropolitan Australia, including lantern making, shadow theatre, illuminated puppets, masks and costume making, and story development.

Jyllie Jackson is the CEO and Creative Director of the Lismore Lantern Parade. I really enjoyed this conversation with Jyllie and hope this chat makes your day a little brighter.

This week on Eventualities, we’re mixing things up and instead of focusing on a particular event or festival, we’ve taken some time to catch up with our good friend and Regional Events Conference MC extraordinaire, Phil Wishart.

Phil has a great passion for regional events, having worked in the sport, events and tourism sectors over the past 15 years.
Phil has previously worked with Destination NSW and is currently employed with the Office of Sport where he is the Head of Marketing and Communications. Prior to this role, he was the Principal Advisor - Major Sports Events at the Office of Sport where Phil’s team worked with state and national sporting organisations, local government and venue owners to deliver on the NSW Government’s 10 World Cups in 10 Years initiative, and identify opportunities to maximise the legacy of hosting major sporting events in NSW.

We hope you enjoy this conversation.

Grazing Down The Lachlan is a foodie adventure along the Lachlan River near Forbes in Central-West NSW, celebrating foraged and farmed regional produce. The event was awarded Bronze at the 2019 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in the Festivals and Events category.

Wendy Muffet is committed to building resilient regional communities and co-founded Grazing Down the Lachlan as part of a bigger vision for building a vibrant tourism economy in Forbes and the wider Central West region in NSW. Wendy and the amazing Grazing committee have already achieved so much and this is just the start of what is fast becoming a must-attend foodie event.

I absolutely loved this conversation with Wendy – I am in awe of her vision, values and love for her region.

Please bear with us during this chat as we experienced some internet issues (one of the challenges of regional living), however I hope you agree the end result is worth it.

The Big Red Bash is recognised as the world’s most remote music festival and is situated at the foot of the iconic Big Red Dune in the Simpson Desert, 35km west of Birdsville in Queensland.

From its humble beginnings in 2013 of a singalong around the campfire for a few hundred people, the festival has since grown into Australia’s largest outback event with three days of music featuring a huge line up of some of Australia’s most iconic artists, attracting a sell-out crowd of over 9,000.

Greg Donovan is the founder of the Birdsville Big Red Bash and it was fantastic to have him as my guest on this week’s Eventualities podcast. Just search for Eventualities in your preferred podcast platform.
