So special to see Heidi and Avadh’s beautiful Thailand destination wedding at Rayavadee featured in

Set amongst Krabi’s limestone cliffs and tropical landscape, their celebration brought their closest family and friends together from around the world for a wedding that felt intimate, relaxed and completely connected to its surroundings.

It’s always lovely to see a wedding I’ve photographed shared beyond my own pages, particularly one in a place as extraordinary as Rayavadee.

When I talk about weddings with a European feeling, I don’t necessarily mean getting married in Europe.

I mean the way the day feels.

Long tables. Good food and wine. Beautiful surroundings. Flowers that don’t feel too perfect. People lingering in conversation instead of being rushed towards the next thing.

A little elegance, but plenty of life.

There are so many beautiful places in Australia where that feeling already exists.

For me, European inspiration has never really been about recreating a destination.

It’s a way of celebrating.

What gives a wedding that European feeling to you?

A lot happens before I press the shutter.

I’m looking at where the light is coming from. What’s happening behind someone. Whether moving half a metre will clean up the frame. Which colours are working together. Whether I should direct something or leave it completely alone.

And then I’m waiting.

Because quite often, the photograph I want happens just before or just after the obvious one.

A hand moves. Someone looks away. A dress catches the light differently. Two people forget I’m there for a second.

I think developing your eye has less to do with constantly finding more things to photograph, and more to do with becoming very particular about what you notice.

That’s the part of photography I find endlessly interesting.

Save this for the next time you’re shooting and, before you press the shutter, look at the whole frame first.

I’m increasingly drawn to weddings that feel more like a very good dinner party.

Good drinks. Black tie without the stiffness. People lingering in conversation. Beautiful surroundings, but nothing feeling too precious to actually enjoy.

There’s something very European about that approach to a celebration.

Not because it needs to look like it happened in Italy or France, but because the experience comes first. The food, the wine, the setting, the people and the time to actually be with them.

And photographically, these are often the moments I love most.

The glass being poured. The jacket being adjusted. Everyone crowding in for a drink. The conversations happening around the edges.

The little pieces that make you remember what being there actually felt like.

Give me this kind of wedding every time.
