Knappstein

Knappstein Knappstein Winery was established in 1974 in South Australia's Clare Valley. For legal drinking age only. Drink responsibly http://www.bedrinkaware.com.au/

In 1878, Mrs Fanny Eliza Filgate established the Enterprise Brewery, to satisfy the thirst of local miners in South Australia with a Clare Valley beer. Fanny was a businesswoman extraordinaire and the eldest daughter of the founding father of the Clare Township. The brewery received a steady stream of customers however following a 1915 referendum, which introduced shorter trading hours, the Enterp

rise Brewery closed and instead focussed on producing soft drinks and cordials under the name of Clare Mineral Waters Company. In 1969 a winery was established at the original Enterprise Brewery building by Tim Knappstein, with wines first produced under the Knappstein Enterprise wine label in 1974. Today Knappstein wines seeks to showcase Clare Valley fruit at its purist, and most vibrant without overt, heavy-handed winemaking. We follow a ‘responsive’ winemaking philosophy, exploring the unique character and substance of our outstanding vineyards. Facebook Community Guidelines

Celebrating International Riesling Day today, we take a look across our varied selection of Rieslings, each of which begins their journey within our Clare Valley vineyards:

1878 Transcendence Riesling: Our most elevated Riesling expression. The 1878 Transcendence honours the founding year of the original brewery site that F***y Filgate helped build and upon which our winery and cellar door reside today. This is a wine of rare intensity, complexity, and extraordinary ageing potential.

Ackland Riesling: Drawn from our beautiful Ackland Vineyard in Watervale, this single-site Riesling captures a very specific patch of Clare Valley with remarkable clarity. Minerality, lime blossom, and a long, persistent finish.

Enterprise Riesling: From the Enterprise Vineyard is a Riesling with citrus aromas which concentrate the nose with exceptional power. White peach and pear come through, attesting further to the strength of the fruit.

Clare Valley Riesling: Everything you love about Clare in a glass. Vibrant citrus and crisp acidity that makes Clare Riesling so distinctive among Riesling drinkers around the globe.

Insider Riesling: The Insider Riesling is a very special Riesling, which was divided into two parcels, with a mixture of traditional stainless steel tank fermentation for one parcel, while the other parcel was fermented in barrel.

Drop into our historic cellar door in Clare today for a tasting, open daily from 10am to 4pm.

We’ve just been out picking from our historic Enterprise Vineyard, and the Riesling fruit is looking excellent. The colour, the clarity, the aroma straight off the vine.

Our Chardonnay fruit has just made its way from vine to crusher and just like that, the 2026 Chardonnay begins its journey! The fruit is looking absolutely beautiful this year and we can’t wait to see how this tastes later on in the year.

There's a quiet kind of excitement that takes over the vineyard at this time of year and right now, our Senior Winemaker Michael Kane is right in the middle of it.

Michael has been spending time walking amongst the Knappstein vines, carefully tasting and testing the Chardonnay, and we can tell you, it is very close to picking time. The fruit is looking absolutely beautiful, and we can’t wait to get this back into our winery in Clare.

In the Knappstein vineyard, collecting Gewürztraminer samples for maturity testing. By taking fruit from across the entire block, our team gets a clear picture of how the grapes are developing before heading back to the winery to assess sugar levels ahead of vintage.

Michael Kane, our senior winemaker, talks through some of the key differences between the two sites where our single vineyard Riesling fruit comes from. One of the things we love most about Clare Valley Riesling is how clearly vineyard site shines through.

Our Ackland Vineyard in Watervale sits on limestone-rich soils, producing Rieslings with vibrant acidity, fine mineral structure and beautifully pure citrus flavours.

By contrast, our Enterprise Vineyard in the northern Clare Valley features richer, clay-based soils. These wines show more generosity and intensity, while still retaining the classic lime-driven characters Riesling is known for.

As vintage approaches, picking decisions at Knappstein are guided by careful observation, experience and time spent in the vineyard.

Our team keeps a close eye on canopy health and vine balance, alongside regular maturity testing including Baumé levels to track sugar development. But while numbers are important, they are only part of the picture.

For Senior Winemaker Michael Kane, flavour is the key driver. Regular walks amongst the vines leading up to vintage allow him to taste fruit, assess development and understand how each block is progressing. When the flavours are right, it is time to pick.

The height of summer in the Clare Valley is an important time at our Ackland Vineyard in Watervale, with warmer conditions driving steady increases in ripening across the vines.

As flavour and balance develop, our winemaking team is deep in preparation mode for harvest, which is now only weeks away from getting underway. Closer monitoring and planning are all part of ensuring we pick each parcel at just the right moment.

Vintage is one of the most exciting times of the year here, and the signs are pointing to a busy and rewarding season ahead.
