We love sharing such a special part of Clare Valley heritage with Sevenhill Cellars.. but today are happy to leave the grape growing and wine making to the experts, and just make the most of the opportunity to enjoy some old vine wines!
Old Vine Day | 1st August
Today we celebrate Old Vine Day, a time to honour the resilience, character, and heritage of the world’s oldest vineyards. Here at Sevenhill Cellars, we’re proud to be part of that story.
Our winemaking journey began in 1851, when Brother Joannes Schreiner walked 20 kilometres to Bungaree Station with a wheelbarrow to collect vine cuttings. These were planted along our driveway, marking the birth of Sevenhill Cellars and the Clare Valley as a wine region.
While those original vines have since been removed, in front of our winery today stand the oldest remaining vines in the Clare Valley, planted in 1860. Just 13 rows of Shiraz remain, but these low-yielding, gnarled vines continue to produce fruit of exceptional intensity and depth. They are a living testament to our heritage and the enduring power of old vines.
Join us in raising a glass to these remarkable vines and the history of winemaking in Australia. 🍷
