What an extraordinary achievement, Poppy! 💗

On Shabbat Beresh*t, Poppy celebrated her Bat Mitzvah by chanting all seven aliyot from a Torah dedicated to the memory of her great-grandfather. The day also marked the anniversary of her grandmother’s Bat Mitzvah—a beautiful connection across generations.

As we began the Torah anew, Poppy brought her own voice to its words, carrying her family’s story forward with learning, dedication and heart.

Mazal tov, Poppy, and to your whole family. We’re so proud of you! May this be the beginning of a lifetime of learning, curiosity and finding your own voice in our shared story.

Today marks three years since October 7.

Over Atzeret Simchat Torah, we gathered in memorial, placing our Butterfly Torah mantle on the scroll and remembering those whose lives were taken, those who were held hostage, those who fought and fell, and all whose lives were forever changed.

Tonight, we will gather for Soul Sound. Not another memorial service, but a space simply to breathe, to listen and to acknowledge something we have learned over these past three years: grief and trauma are carried not only in our memories, but in our bodies.

And on Friday night, as part of Kabbalat Shabbat, we will gather again in remembrance, bringing the memory of October 7 with us into Shabbat.

These are different ways of holding the same day.

Gersh has written a reflection about why we remember, and what he believe remembrance asks of us. "Memory matters. But Jewish memory has never been only about looking backwards. We remember so that we can recommit: to who we want to be, to the values by which we want to live, and to the kind of world we still believe is possible".

We remember so that memory can shape what we choose to do next.

Three years since October 7, our community continues to carry grief, uncertainty and upheaval — compounded by the Bondi attack and the challenges many of us experience in our families, relationships, workplaces and daily lives.

Soul Sound was created in response to this shared weight, offering an embodied experience of healing, resilience and connection.

Join Beata Heymann for guided breathwork and Rodney Pollak for immersive live sound — a space to slow down, breathe, listen and make room for whatever we are carrying, without needing to explain it.

No experience is necessary. Simply come as you are.

Last year, as the final hostage came home from Gaza, we took down the handmade butterflies that had surrounded our sanctuary. They had held our prayers, our anguish and our hope. We wanted to carry them forward.

Our friend and talented textile artist Rhonda Nirens brought them into a beautiful new form: a Torah mantle. Repurposing the blue velvet, threads from the butterflies and a handful of the butterflies themselves, she created something that holds the memory of what they had meant to our community.

Each year, on Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, we will dress our scroll in this mantle. We will remember that homecoming, those whose lives were stolen in the horrific terrorist attacks of 7 October, and all whose lives were forever changed.

As we read with trepidation and pride about the events that unfolded en route to Israel overnight, we have placed the mantle on our Torah a few days early as a gesture of gratitude, solidarity and pride.

Wrapped around our Torah are the threads of our community’s love and memory. As we prepare to turn again to its opening words, we carry them with us.

This Simchat Torah, we’re rolling out the whole Torah. Literally.

Join us at Shtiebel for one of the most joyful nights of the Jewish year as we dance, sing and unravel the entire Torah scroll around the room, journeying from Creation to the final words of Deuteronomy before rolling all the way back to the beginning.

What a beautiful Sukkot weekend at Shtiebel! 🌿

From Friday night’s sausage sizzle and family activities to our Sukkot morning service, Q***r Conversations in the Sukkah on Sunday, and PJ Library Storytime, people of all generations filled our sukkah with conversation, creativity and joy.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring our beautiful sukkah to life. There are plenty more opportunities to gather this week, and we can’t wait to welcome you back for Simchat Torah!
