Naming Days
Many people wonder what a Naming Day is and how it differs from a Christening.
A Christening is typically held in a church and is usually religious in nature. It often involves religious symbolism and focuses on the beginning of a child’s journey of faith.
A Naming Ceremony, on the other hand, can be a meaningful alternative. It may be completely non-religious, or gently spiritual, and is ideal for families who prefer to allow their child the freedom to choose their own beliefs as they grow older.
A Naming Day can be held at any age and is entirely personalisable. It is a beautiful opportunity to celebrate your child surrounded by family and loved ones. At the heart of the ceremony is your child, along with the hopes, values, and wishes you have for their future.
If you choose, you may also appoint godparents or alternative roles such as Guide Parents, Guardians, or any title that feels right for you. These individuals can play an important role in your child’s life, with responsibilities defined entirely by you — from being another trusted adult to turn to, to someone who offers guidance, support, and care as your child grows.
There are many meaningful rituals that can be incorporated into the day if you wish. These may include planting a tree, lighting a candle, sharing readings or poems, or any other element that reflects your family and values.
