What exactly is Jab music? 🇬🇩🔥
Jab comes out of Grenada’s Jab Jab tradition, especially connected to J’Ouvert.
The name comes from the French Creole word “diable”, meaning devil.
Traditionally, Jab Jab masqueraders would cover themselves in black oil or paint, wear horns, carry chains and take to the road with drums, chants and Carnival energy.
Over time, that same energy found its way into the music.
Jab Soca is known for being hard, percussive, repetitive and built for the road. It often has heavy drums, chants, call-and-response and that kind of rhythm that makes you feel like you need to move before you’ve even worked out what the song is saying 😂
What makes Jab different is that it isn’t just a sound — it comes from a whole Carnival tradition tied to expression, resistance, freedom and Grenadian identity.
And why does it feel like Jab is suddenly everywhere? 👀
Part of it is because Caribbean music is travelling faster than ever through Carnival, DJs, TikTok, mixes and the diaspora.
People are also leaning into sounds that feel raw, energetic and made for movement, and Jab fits that perfectly.
Grenada definitely gave us something special with this one. 🇬🇩
