Botswana has fully legalized homosexuality in a landmark human rights ruling for Africa — and the legal framework the court used to reach that conclusion is as significant as the outcome itself. The ruling struck down colonial-era laws that had criminalized same-sex relationships between consenting adults. Those laws were not indigenous to Botswana's legal tradition — they were imported through British colonialism and inherited by the post-independence state, as similar laws were inherited by dozens of other African nations that had no hand in writing them. The court's decision connects sexual orientation explicitly to rights that Botswana's constitution already protects — the right to privacy, the right to dignity, and the right to personal freedom. The reasoning is direct: if the constitution protects these rights for its citizens, and sexual orientation is a fundamental aspect of a person's identity and private life, then laws that criminalize people on the basis of that orientation are unconstitutional. The ruling places Botswana alongside a growing number of African countries that have moved away from the criminalization framework — a movement that cuts against the narrative that LGBTQ rights are a Western imposition rather than a recognition of human dignity that belongs to everyone regardless of geography. The comment section captured what the ruling means in human terms beyond the legal language. People expressing, for the first time, that they could imagine traveling to Botswana without fearing for their lives simply because of who they are. That is the practical measure of what decriminalization produces. Not an abstract legal change. The removal of a specific and real danger from ordinary life.Botswana made that change. The legal record of the African continent is different because of it.

Who goes first to say your vows?

Tradition says it is always the groom. But those days have gone!

If you’re getting married in a civil ceremony with a celebrant (Me!), we talk about it.

You can decide ahead of time, or, to add a bit of extra fun to your ceremony, let Lady Luck decide in the moment.

Rock paper scissors. Ask your guests to vote by applause in response to my asking who should go first. Or toss a coin.

You can do a regular Heads or Tails. You can use an old or a foreign coin that has a link with something special for you, or you can use a personalised Decision Coin with your names on it.

A Legals-Only Ceremony can be as meaningful and emotional as a bigger one, when it is

✔️a Married in a Minute Ceremony (legals only with a splash of ceremony)

✔️ an intentional choice and not a default “it’s all too difficult, let’s just settle for being legally married” expression of defeat

✔️ focussed on the two of you

✔️ officiated by a celebrant who can capture the essence of your commitment in a few meaningful words

Affordable. Available 7 days a week. Can organised in a month.

The Marriage Act requires celebrants to make sure that
✔️you are who you say you are
✔️you are an adult
✔️you are free to marry
✔️you want to marry the other person
✔️nobody is forcing or influencing you against your will

And that’s it.

The gender box on the Notice of Intended Marriage is optional. You’re welcome to leave it blank.
