As the world tunes into the FIFA World Cup, we took a trip back through the Queensland State Library archives and uncovered a fascinating piece of Brisbane Showgrounds history. ⚽

These photos capture a match between Queensland and Yugoslavia played right here at the Showgrounds in 1949, when international football was drawing crowds to Bowen Hills decades before the modern game reached the heights we know today.

For nearly 150 years, Brisbane Showgrounds has welcomed everything from agricultural exhibitions and concerts to major sporting moments. Seeing these images is a reminder that football has long been part of our story.

The Brisbane Sake Festival will make its debut at the Brisbane Showgrounds from 19–21 June, transforming the John Reid Pavilion into a vibrant celebration of Japan’s national beverage.
