A wonderful sunny afternoon in Nuriootpa; the Barossa Valley’s big town, tasting at the production facility with owner Kym Teusner; wines of his name. The foremost drink was the ex-Neopolitan variety fiano Lucius, packed up in a riesling bottle to impress on us it is bright and crisp, which it is (12%). Kym has enjoyed commercial success with his modernistic approach to easy drinkable styles of Barossa reds; the first a 2024 juicy/light unwooded grenache followed by a favourite, 2024 Joshua GMS, grenache, mourvedre, shiraz also unwooded, 65% grenache; then 2023 Avatar, serious GSM, old oak aged, 50% grenache; substantive blend; then a bottle all mataro/mourvedre 2022 Mataro; not a monster but a juicy black sweets style. The finale was an associated single vineyard blend …..MSG 2022 mataro shiraz grenache known as Utopos; clever, classy, it had a hunger for new oak, a rare example in this Teusner tasting.
