Event catering in the 1980s was buffet lunches, chicken or beef at the gala, no vegan options and almost no thought given to healthy choices.

Catering is a much bigger job now, and most of it happens well before anyone gets to the venue. Dietary requirements captured properly at registration, allergens confirmed with the kitchen, cultural needs accounted for, and enough detail on the day that nobody has to stand at a buffet asking what's in something.

It takes real coordination between registration, the venue and the floor team, and it's a good example of why the detail sits with us rather than the client.

We've been named a National Nominee for PCO of the Year at the 2026 Australian Event Awards and Symposium.

The last twelve months brought seven new clients across cybersecurity, ecology, music education, health, maritime decarbonisation and professional associations. National conferences, technical workshops, awards programs, regional seminars. Different sectors, different budgets, different definitions of a good result.

What made that possible isn't visible in an awards entry. It's a group of people doing careful work over long stretches, most of it invisible to anyone standing in the room on the day.

Deb, Kathryn, Jo, Jess, Bianca, Bruce, Nick, Sue, Alicia and Richard. This one belongs to all of you.

Winners are announced on 21 October.

Since 2019 we've had the privilege of delivering the Australian Elder Abuse Conference, and it remains some of the work our team is proudest of.

This year's theme was Stand up, Speak Out. Across the program, advocates, legal experts, First Nations leaders and people speaking from lived experience worked through some genuinely difficult territory, from systemic ageism in healthcare to coercive control within families.

Our job is to build the space that lets those conversations happen properly. Thank you to Elder Abuse Action Australia, Caxton Community Legal Centre and Aged and Disability Advocacy Australia, and to Jo, Jess, Bruce and Nick, who held the floor beautifully across the week.

Considering the Sunshine Coast for a future conference? We've just done the groundwork for you.

Jess Blackwood attended the Sunshine Coast Showcase, hosted by Visit Sunshine Coast Business Events, reviewing the region's newest developments first hand. The Wave public transit network is progressing ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games and will change how delegates move around, while properties like the new Avani Hotels & Resorts are lifting the accommodation and event space on offer.

Staying current on destinations, venues and suppliers is a core part of how we work as a PCO. Tell us what your event needs and we'll tell you whether the Sunshine Coast delivers it.

Most event branding starts with the invitation and works outwards from there. A look gets chosen, then stretched across the holding slide, the signage and the lanyards until it runs out.

Starting with the message instead changes what you end up with. What is this event trying to say, and does the room say it before anyone speaks?

Delegates never see design and experience as separate things. They just form an impression, and it forms early.

Worth thinking about now if you're planning for next year.

Every conference meets something the run sheet didn't account for. A speaker withdraws late, the numbers land nowhere near the forecast, the weather closes the terrace an hour before the welcome function.

The plans that hold aren't the most detailed ones. They're the ones with room built in.

The best onsite teams are invisible to delegates and indispensable to organisers.

Ours handles check-in, enquiries, changes and the hundred small things that come up across an event, so your team can spend the day with the people they came to see.

Eight hour days, early flights, back to back sessions. No wonder focus drops by mid afternoon.

Quiet rooms and recharge spaces give delegates somewhere to reset, and they make events easier to attend for anyone managing the sensory load of a busy venue.

The Nectar team was thrilled to be on-site at the Pullman Hotels and Resorts Albert Park for the Thoracic Oncology Group of Australasia (TOGA) ASM 2026 last week.

An incredible few days of facilitating connections, in person and online. As the Professional Conference Organiser, it was a privilege to work alongside the TOGA team to deliver a hybrid experience that brings scientific breakthroughs and collaborative discussion to delegates wherever they are.

A huge thank you to the TOGA committee for their partnership, and to our hard-working team on the ground for a week well run.

There's a question we ask when reviewing any conference program: if this session went, what would genuinely be missed?

If it's on the agenda because it ran last year, or because a stream needed filling, it's a candidate for the cut. Freeman's research found attendees now judge value by what changes for them after the event, rather than by how much content they sat through.

We've written about layered programs and why filling every hour works against the delegates you're trying to serve. Read it on the blog.
