As we get ready to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Brazil Week, I found myself looking back through the photos and videos from our very first event. My heart was filled with gratitude.

Five years ago, Brazil Week was just an idea and a hope that we could create something meaningful to bring people, businesses and cultures together. Looking at these memories reminded me that every great initiative starts with people who are willing to believe in an idea before anyone knows what it might become.

Our opening cocktail at the beautiful Ithaca Auditorium, Brisbane City Hall was an unforgettable evening. We were honoured to welcome an extraordinary group of guests, including Her Excellency Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland, and Professor Graeme Nimmo RFD; Leanne Linard MP, then Minister for Multicultural Affairs; Cr Vicki Howard; Ambassador Maurício Lyrio, then Brazil’s Ambassador to Australia; Ambassador Jorge Kadri, then Consul-General of Brazil; our dear friend and acclaimed Brazilian actor Nelson Freitas; and the wonderful Australian bossa nova band, The View from Madeleine’s Couch.

Special thanks also to German Week and Honorary Consul Professor Michael Rosemann for their friendship, encouragement and support in those early days.

To everyone who attended, volunteered, sponsored, partnered with us and believed in this dream from the beginning—thank you. And my deepest gratitude goes to the Australia Brazil Chamber Board and every volunteer who has been with us throughout this journey. Brazil Week simply would not be what it is today without you.

As we prepare to celebrate our 5th anniversary, I look back with gratitude and look ahead with even greater excitement.
