O’ BROTHER, WHERE ART THOUGH?

Set in the Deep South during the Great Depression, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” follows the journey of three escaped convicts: Ulysses Everett McGill, Pete Hogwallop, and Delmar O’Donnell. Everett, played by George Clooney, is on a quest to find his estranged wife, Penny, and reclaim her before she remarries. As they traverse the rural landscape of Mississippi, the trio encounters a series of colorful characters and absurd situations, including a blind prophet who foretells their fate, a group of sirens, and a political campaign that culminates in a musical showdown. Their adventure is infused with elements of Southern folklore, mythology, and a rich soundtrack featuring traditional American music. Throughout their journey, the convicts not only seek freedom from their past but also grapple with themes of loyalty, redemption, and the pursuit of happiness. The film blends humor, drama, and a unique visual style, creating a modern-day odyssey that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

RAIN MAN

a poignant drama that explores the complex relationship between two brothers, Charlie Babbitt and Raymond Babbitt. Charlie, played by Tom Cruise, is a self-centered car dealer who discovers that his estranged brother, Raymond, portrayed brilliantly by Dustin Hoffman, is an autistic savant with exceptional mathematical abilities. When their father passes away, Charlie learns that he has been left with only a vintage car, while the bulk of the inheritance has been allocated to Raymond, who resides in a care facility. In a bid to gain control of the money, Charlie kidnaps Raymond and embarks on a cross-country journey. Throughout their travels, Charlie’s initial selfish motives begin to evolve as he witnesses Raymond’s unique talents and struggles. As the brothers navigate their differences and develop a bond, “Rain Man” ultimately becomes a touching story of family, acceptance, and personal growth.

A road trip movie with a twist, featuring an extraordinary Oscar winning performance by Dustin Hoffman as an autistic genius savant (based on an actual person) and a charismatic, coming of age turn by Tom Cruise that showcases his growth as a serious actor, revealing layers of vulnerability and emotional complexity not seen in his earlier roles..

MALCOLM

A special matinee screening of this beloved Aussie classic.
Malcolm Hughes (Colin Friels) is a shy, reclusive and brilliant inventor who loses his job and then takes in two new roommates, Judith (Lindy Davies) and Frank (John Hargreaves), to help pay the rent. His life is changed with the discovery that his new roommates happen to live a criminal lifestyle. Their newfound adventure is about to lead to an unlikely and heartwarming friendship.

Australian movies of this era have a certain nostalgic feel, the streets and places we knew filled with characters no longer found in film, and Malcolm is no exception, with brilliant performances by Friels and the extremely talented and sadly departed John Hargreaves, Malcolm is an irresistibly charming and funny film. An extremely clever caper movie directed by the always great Nadia Tass at the height of her powers.

MERMAIDS

Mermaids” is a charming coming-of-age comedy-drama that blends humor and heartfelt moments, featuring standout performances by Cher, Winona Ryder, and Christina Ricci.

“Mermaids” is a whimsical coming-of-age film set in the 1960s that revolves around the unconventional life of a single mother and her two daughters. Cher delivers a brilliant performance as the free-spirited and eccentric mother, Rachel Flax, who navigates her romantic escapades and the challenges of raising her daughters in a world that often feels restrictive. Winona Ryder shines as the introspective and rebellious teenager, Charlotte, who grapples with her identity and the complexities of adolescence while yearning for stability and love. ALIEN

A modern classic, Alien blends science fiction, horror and bleak poetry into a seamless whole.

“Alien,” directed by Ridley Scott and released in 1979, is a groundbreaking science fiction horror film that follows the crew of the commercial space tug Nostromo as they encounter a deadly extraterrestrial creature. The crew, consisting of seven members, responds to a distress signal from a remote planet, only to discover a derelict spacecraft containing alien eggs. When one of the crew members is attacked by a facehugger, they unwittingly bring an unseen terror aboard their ship. As the alien creature grows and begins to hunt them one by one, the crew members must confront their worst fears and fight for survival in the confined spaces of the Nostromo. Sigourney Weaver stars as Ellen Ripley, the ship’s warrant officer, who emerges as a formidable and resourceful leader amidst the chaos. Ripley’s character is notable for being one of the first strong female leads in a genre traditionally dominated by male protagonists, showcasing intelligence, bravery, and resilience. The film is renowned for its suspenseful atmosphere, innovative special effects, and the terrifying design of the alien, created by H.R. Giger. “Alien” not only redefined the science fiction and horror genres but also paved the way for future female characters in cinema, establishing Ripley as an iconic figure in film history.

Wednesday the 18th of June at 7pm
PARIS, TEXAS.

Universally acclaimed as a masterpiece of cinema, “Paris, Texas” is a poignant drama directed by Wim Wenders that explores themes of alienation, redemption, and the quest for connection. The film follows Travis Henderson, a man who re-emerges from the desert after being missing for four years. Suffering from amnesia and emotional turmoil, Travis embarks on a journey to reconnect with his estranged son, Hunter, who has been living with his uncle in Texas. As Travis and Hunter travel across the American landscape, they begin to forge a bond, but Travis’s past looms over them. The search for Travis’s wife, Jane, who abandoned the family, becomes a central focus of their journey. The film delves into the complexities of love and loss, ultimately leading Travis to confront his past and seek closure. Visually stunning and emotionally charged, “Paris, Texas” captures the essence of the American experience while highlighting the deep human need for connection and understanding.

Stunning cinematography, a singular, unique soundtrack by Ry Cooder, and stellar performances by the entire cast makes Paris, Texas a quiet yet deeply moving kind of Western, that captures a place and people like never before (or after).
