Art For Today

Art For Today Art For Today facilitate wellbeing Art Sessions for corporate teams and groups founded by Gemma Donnellan, Professional Artist and Creative Coach

As a professional artist and Connector, I love hosting engaging art sessions, where people take time out, tap into their creative flow and have fun. I specialise in helping women to open up their creativity, let go of self-doubt and limiting beliefs, and embrace the freedom of self-expression that art provides. I believe everyone has an innate artist and through guidance can let go of inhibitions

and unlock their creativity and positive flow, which I believe has a transformational effect on other areas of life. Whether you’ve been dabbling for a while, or haven’t picked up a paintbrush since primary school, you’ll love my art sessions. It’s a nurturing space for women to take time to connect with themselves, ponder, play and converse with others. I have been formally trained and practiced for more than 20 years, I’ve been painting since I could hold a brush. This means I’m well qualified to guide you the painting skills you need to bring out the artist in you. As well as building my own business, I’ve spent many years in a large studio practice collaborating with and working alongside exceptional established artists. This type of knowledge and practical know-how gleaned from the studio you can’t get from YouTube, it’s skills and experience shared over a round table, through exploration, practice and sometimes making mistakes which sometimes turn out to be break-throughs. My art sessions are designed with all this experience in mind, stirring inspiration, imagination and developing positive ways of thinking and expanding, unlocking your unique expression. Throughout my career I have had six solo exhibitions, been a feature artist and exhibited in numerous group shows, all of which have cultivated my diverse style and subject matters. So it doesn’t matter what type of painting interests you, I can guide you. When I’m not holding my art classes or painting, I love, yoga, meditation, gardening and music. Through art I have also had the privilege to organise and take part in numerous fundraising activities which is something I love. The art sessions I offer allow me to mix my love of community, people and entertaining with art and creativity.

Meet the Talent: Connecting Art with Interior Designers in Melbourne

Our recent Meet the Talent night brought together interior designers, architects, and media professionals with 25 of Melbourne's most exciting contemporary artists. Our guest speakers @ (aka Brad Smith) and .art discussed their concepts, art inspirations and technical process.

Brad took us through his unique process, combining painting and laser-etching techniques to create works that blend mid-century modernism with brutalist influences. Steven talked us through his 'Rorschach test' inspiration and his exploration of humour in his abstractions and whimsical artworks - he shared insights into colour theory and the delicate balance between chaos and order in composition. ✨

What made the evening special was watching the connections between designers looking for distinctive artwork for their projects and artists seeking to have their work featured in Melbourne's most exciting spaces. The studio tours provided a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into creative processes, while the exhibition showcased an incredibly diverse range of styles and mediums.

If you're an interior designer or architect looking to incorporate unique artwork into your projects, I'd love to connect. As an art consultant with access to a wide range of artists and genres, I can help you find the perfect piece that complements your design vision while supporting local Melbourne talent.

My passion is creating connections between the design and art worlds - each enhancing the other to create truly spectacular spaces. ✨

Ever feel caught in that social media paradox? This artwork "I want to be famous but I can't be bothered" by COADY at the Milliken event last night perfectly captures my relationship with the digital world.

As someone who loves connecting with people and sharing my work, I know it's essential for business growth. But then you hear you need at LEAST 17 touchpoints before people even remember who you are, the constant pressure to produce, promote, and be "on" can be draining.

Lovely night last night at the Couture carpet event. Fascinating to learn about their customized carpet design process - from initial concept through to material selection and production techniques.

I've always imagined one of my artworks translated into a rug format... perhaps another creative project. The possibilities for material translation between mediums are endless.

It was a fabulous evening, from the great tunes by the DJ, divine food, great artworks and of course gorgeous carpets - so much design inspo - from stunning backlit bar displays to the creative use of vertical space in their showroom. These industry events always remind me why I love being immersed in the design world, even when the social media side feels overwhelming.

Thanks Milliken for a fab night and especially Carla for the invite. 🩷

Introducing our award-winning guest speaker 'Original Smith' (aka Brad Smith) Modernist Brutalist

Brad brings a unique perspective as a 'modernist - brutalist' artist whose work embodies tact and reticence; celebrating the purity and vibrancy of mid-century modernism and the austerity of brutalism.

His innovative process combines painting and laser-etching techniques to create artworks that are at once figurative and abstract.

I love Easter in Melbourne, it's quiet, a great time to check out new venues around town and see what's happening in design.

Having worked in architecture for years and being married to an architect, we nerd out on details, materials being used, colours, textures, patterns and fresh design ideas.

Mid Air at Melbourne Place was a highlight with that stunning circular brick window framing the skyline - absolutely genius architecture. Salmon lounges with the geometric flooring created such a warm contrast against the exposed brick.

The Morris Hotel designed by RED design group (the guest speakers at my last Meet the Talent event) a perfect example of how to keep the heritage features combined with contemporary aesthetics, loved the evergreen foliage on the rooftop.

I especially loved all the arty and quirkiness of the QT on Russell Street. A stunning staircase featured a wall of books, mounted artistic plates, a peacock in the foyer, embosed bronze front desk and gorgeous digital artwork alongside lux leather in the elevators. A feast for my eyes and artistic inspiration.

Wondering through the Block Arcade, (my favourite Melbourne Arcade) we ran into old friends and stopped for a sppontaneous catch up, something which normally would take ages to organise.

We also ducked into the rooftop at Farmers Daughters for a gorgeous lunch with views of the tree tops and slick interior.

So much to see in the city - could have spent the whole weekend there on our architectural adventure.

Lots of fun, highly recommend for a perfect thing to do in Melbourne.

Introducing Steven Joshua as our second guest speaker

Steven is known for his innovative explorations across abstract and absurdist realms. His work seamlessly blends bold abstraction with whimsical surrealism, creating artworks that both challenge and enchant.

His striking use of vibrant colour and form creates fluid compositions that evoke emotional responses, inviting viewers to interpret their intricate patterns and textures. Each piece is a meditative exploration of the relationship between chaos and order. ✨

Super Excited to be featured on Kellie Stirling's podcast, where we dive into art as a resource for healing and connection.

Kellie is a coach with 15 years experience in adult development, integrated sexuality, and relationships. Her background in leadership and organisational development brings depth to her conversations about human growth and creativity.

Here's what Kellie shared about our episode:

Ep 56 Art, a resource for all of us, with Gemma Donnellan

Today I am talking with Gemma Donnellan who is an artist and art curator, a creator of community and a natural born network.

Gemma has a gift of bringing people together around art. Gemma began her career as an artist which she has created over time whilst working full time and also being a stay at home parent. She has spent many years painting, in community, before moving back into a curatorial role, bringing emerging and established artists together in exhibitions.

Gemma is skilled in how she pulls together different artists to curate art shows of diverse pieces of art that seem to have a common thread running through them that you can only work out once you have looked at all the paintings.

She has created networks for women to come together around art in her quarterly sessions she calls Reciprocity, where ideas are shared, provocative conversations created around topics of interest.

✨ For those who don't know me... ✨

Hi, I'm Gemma Donnellan, founder of Art For Today.

I know it looks like I am doing 'Jazz Hands' and trust me I love to dance, but I am actually talking to a group of amazing women about connection, art and the concept of reciprocity.💫

I love connecting people, introducing people to Art and above all else having fun.

With over 30 years immersed in the art world, as a professional artist, curator and creative coach, I've created a space where art meets life in the most accessible way possible.

Many people feel intimidated when it comes to selecting artwork - not knowing where to begin, what to look for, or how to find pieces that truly resonate with their space and style.

This is where I come in. I make the art selection process easy and enjoyable, connecting artists with spaces and people who appreciate their work. Whether you're looking for something for your home, office, or as a special gift, I can help you navigate the incredible world of original art.

My journey through architecture, corporate life, and as a practicing artist myself has given me a unique perspective on how art transforms environments and creates atmosphere.

I've recently been featured on several podcasts discussing art, creativity and connection - I'll pop the links in the comments if you're interested in hearing more.

If you've ever stared at a bare wall and felt stuck, or walked into a gallery and felt overwhelmed - let's chat. Art should be a joy, not a challenge, and finding the perfect piece should feel like coming home.

I currently have an exhibition on 'High Bohemia' celebrating over 20 artists on until the 24th of April, let me know if you would like a viewing.

Welcome to my world.
