What Is Handfasting?

Handfasting is a ceremonial ritual where a couple’s hands are gently bound together with cords, ribbons, or even vines to symbolize their union. It was originally used as a form of betrothal under Brehon law in Ireland, where couples pledged themselves to each other for a year and a day before deciding to marry officially.

The Ritual Elements
Here’s how a modern handfasting ceremony might unfold:
• The Binding: The couple stands face to face, holding hands. A celebrant or loved one wraps a cord around their joined hands.
• The Vows: As each loop is tied, the couple may speak vows or blessings—either traditional Celtic ones or personal promises.
• The Cord: Couples often choose cords with meaningful colors or materials—like heirloom fabric, silk ribbons, or even floral garlands1.
• The Symbolism: Each knot represents a shared value—love, trust, unity, or commitment. Some couples use three cords to symbolize strength and balance.

Magical Touches
You can personalize the ritual with:
• Charms like shamrocks or horseshoes for luck
• Nature elements like vines, flowers, or feathers
• Guest participation, where loved ones contribute ribbons to the cord
