Let me take you right back to the beginning. 🌱

This was my very first vase arrangement, created for an order for a beautiful mother.

My hands have learnt so much since then and there are a hundred things I’d do differently today. But then I remember the beautiful feedback I received from the customer and her māmā. To this day, I remember how loved it was and how much that meant to me.

It reminds me that Marama Flax Creations was never founded on perfection. It was founded on creating something meaningful for someone else, learning as we went and having people in our community trust my hands before I even trusted them myself.

So instead of cringing at where I started, I’m learning to honour her.

Because we wouldn’t be creating what we do today without creating this first.

🌱 Have you met our Guest Shelf?
Okay… technically, it’s not really a shelf.

Our Guest Shelf goodies are actually sprinkled all around our little shop. It’s simply what we lovingly call the collection of products and creations made by other makers that we’re lucky enough to stock alongside our own.

And we thought it was time you met them properly…

Living KoKo
This one feels pretty special in our space.

Living KoKo creates small batch cacao products using cacao sourced from independent small plot farmers in Samoa and across the Pacific, with a strong focus on culture, community, connection and ethical trade. Their products are handmade here in Victoria.

Their Head & Heart Drinking Cacao is 100% organic cacao, no additives or preservatives. Cacao is naturally packed with goodness, including magnesium, iron, potassium and antioxidants, while also containing compounds associated with mood and feelings of wellbeing.

But what we love most is the connection behind the cup.

In Samoan culture, sharing koko has long been part of gathering, conversation and connection. A warm cup can become a reason to sit, slow down, ground yourself and share space with someone else.

And THAT feels very at home here at Marama Flax Creations.

Beautiful handmade 100% beeswax candles and creations. Each one made by hand, with all those little imperfections and details that make handmade pieces so special. Perfect for gifting, adding warmth to your home… or taking one home just because you love it.

Mr B 3D

Our youngest Guest Shelf creator! A clever local teenage boy creating the coolest 3D-printed mini vases.

We especially love having Mr B’s creations around our shop because there’s something pretty special about giving our youth a space to have a go, create something of their own and see their creations sitting proudly amongst other makers.

Our Guest Shelf was never really about having another shelf. It’s about making room for others.

Supporting local.
Supporting handmade.
Supporting our young people.
Supporting other creatives doing their thing.

There’s room for all of us to grow.

Built for Dad. 🌿

There’s something about this one that just feels like fatherhood… strong, grounded, protective, but with softness woven through it too.

Our Father’s Day Bunnings Bucket Creation was designed with a little meaning behind every layer.

The Bunnings bucket represents the hands on dads… the builders, fixers, makers and the ones who somehow reckon they can fix absolutely anything.

The strong palms and grasses represent protection and strength… that steady presence standing tall behind their whānau (family).

The harakeke (flax) woven through the arrangement represents connection and whānau… the generations that came before us and those we’re raising now.

And amongst all that strength, we’ve added soft florals and delicate textures… because fatherhood isn’t only about being strong. It’s the cuddles, patience, guidance, quiet love and all those little moments that often go unseen.

A Father’s Day creation made a little differently.

Just a little warning about popping into our shop… 🌱

You might come in “just for a look”.

Next minute you’ve had a cuppa, touched seventeen different arrangements, told us your life story, found something you definitely didn’t come in for… and somehow been here for 40 minutes. 😝

That’s kinda how we like it though.

No fancy shop voices.
No pressure to buy.
No awkward following you around.

Just come in, have a nosey, pick things up, ask questions, have a yarn and see what catches your eye.

We’re a little studio tucked away at 📍 10 Grose Lane, Bairnsdale… filled with harakeke, florals, little treasures and usually a bit of chaos behind the scenes.

Open every Tuesday to Thursday - 9am to 3pm

Pop ya head in.

Some moments are bigger than the flowers. 🌿

Today, one Māmā walked into Petals & Prams with her four month old bubba. She got to have a cuppa, try some koko, slow down for a little while and create her own little floral arrangement.

And she got to do it all because another Māmā had already paid for her spot.

A complete stranger.

You don’t always hear about these little moments of kindness. One mum simply wanting another mum she’d never met to have a moment for herself and getting to be part of the whole process…from the giving, to telling our beautiful receiver that her session had already been taken care of… was pretty bloody special.

But my favourite part came while she was creating.

The inner child giggles.
The playing with florals.

A reminder that creating doesn’t have to be big, perfect or overwhelming. Sometimes it can just be sitting with your bubba nearby, having a cuppa and making something little with your own hands.

I wish our beautiful Pay It Forward goddess could have heard those giggles…. Maybe she’ll read this and know that what she gifted wasn’t just a floral session.

She gifted another mum a moment.

A moment to create.
A moment to receive.
A moment to feel thought of by someone she had never even met.

We need more of this between Mums. 🥹

We don’t own the land. The land owns us. 🌿

Over the weekend, while attending an event in Narrm/Melbourne, we had the privilege of being welcomed onto Country by Uncle Jason through a beautiful Welcome to Country ceremony.

There was one part of his yarn that has stayed with me ever since.

“We don’t own the land. The land owns us.”

It breathes with us.
It heals us.
It guides us.

Sitting there listening, I instantly thought about the foundations of Marama Flax Creations and why connection to whenua (land) sits so deeply within what we do.

Before the flowers.
Before the weaving.
Before our hands begin creating.

There is whenua. There is a relationship and a responsibility to the places that hold us, nourish us and allow us to create.

A little reminder from the weekend to slow down, put our feet on the whenua, breathe and listen. Sometimes she’s already giving us exactly the guidance we need.

The sentence we hear the most at MFC?
“But I’m not creative…” 🌿

And honestly, these photos say otherwise.

So many people walk through our doors telling us they’re not creative, they won’t know what to do, or theirs “won’t look as good as everyone else’s.”

Then slowly, piece by piece, they create something that is completely their own.

No two creations need to look the same.
There’s no perfect way to create here.
We’ll guide you, encourage you and help when you need it, but what you walk out holding is yours.

And that little proud smile at the end?
That’s one of our favourite parts.

Maybe you’re more creative than you give yourself credit for.
