Due to unforeseen circumstances our Onam celebration originally planned for 30 August 2026 has been postponed.

💛 NEW DATE: Sunday, 13 September 2026

🌼 WHAT IS ONAM? - A LITTLE PIECE OF KERALA IN MACKAY 🌼
Have you ever heard or celebrated Onam? 🌿
Onam is Kerala’s much-loved annual festival traditionally connected with the harvest season, but at its heart, it is a celebration of abundance, gratitude, equality, kindness and togetherness ❤️

According to a beloved Kerala tradition, King Mahabali (Maveli) was a generous and just king whose people lived happily and equally. It is believed that once a year, Mahabali returns to visit his people.

And we welcome him with Pookalam, food (Onam Sadhya) music and joy! 🌸

🌺 Pookalam- beautiful flower designs made at the entrance of homes to welcome Mahabali.

🍃 Onam Sadhya - a traditional Kerala vegetarian feast, served on a banana leaf, with a delicious variety of curries, vegetables, pickles, rice and sweet dishes. It's more than a meal it's about sharing and celebrating together. When you prepare a Sadhya for someone, you're essentially saying, There is enough for everyone!! Please sit with us, eat with us and celebrate with us.

🎤Music, games and family gatherings - all bringing people together in the spirit of Onam.

For many of us who have made Australia our home, Onam is a beautiful way to stay connected to our roots and share our culture with the community we now call home. We want to bring a little taste of Kerala (South India) to Mackay - and invite everyone, whether you grew up celebrating Onam or have never experienced it before, to come, taste, learn, connect and celebrate with us.
