Some race days feel like they were written in advance. Saturday was one of them.

It was Jockeys Remembrance Day at Ladbrokes Pioneer Park, a day set aside by the Alice Springs Turf Club to honour the men and women who have given their careers, their courage, and in some cases much more, to the sport of racing. Those who came before us. Those riding today. Those still to come. And the way the day unfolded? It felt like a tribute delivered from the track itself.

Official Results

Race 1 — Leading Jockey Paul Denton Handicap (Div 1)
Voronya (G. Connor / P. Denton)

Race 2 — National Seniors Month Handicap (Div 2)
Highstrung NZ (R. Viney / Ms J. Booth)

Race 3 — Leading Apprentice Lek Maloney Handicap
Lucky Fortuna (K. Healy / I. Luximon)

Race 4 — Ladbrokes Red Centre Winter Series (Heat 8)
Tango Stepz (R. Viney / Ms J. Booth)

Race 5 — Jockey Celebration Day Handicap (Div 1)
Limited Risk (K. Healy / Ms J. Doyle)

Race 6 — Truckies Day 28th Aug Handicap (Div 2)
Forever A Diamond (K. Healy / Ms J. Doyle)

Race 7 — Leading Trainer Kerry Petrick Handicap
Grinzinger Bishop NZ (K. Healy / I. Luximon)

The moment of the day belonged to Paul Denton — winning Race 1 in the race named in his honour, days after cementing the season's jockey premiership. If you needed a sign the racing gods were paying attention, that was it.

Trainer Kym Healy was the dominant force with four winners across the card — Lucky Fortuna, Limited Risk, Forever A Diamond, and Grinzinger Bishop. A four-timer on any day is special. On Jockeys Remembrance Day, it's something else.

Jade Doyle rode a slick double in Races 5 and 6, while Jessica Booth quietly turned in one of the rides of the day — two wins from two for trainer Ray Viney, including the $9 upset in Heat 8 of the Winter Series. Ianish Luximon also doubled up for Healy in Races 3 and 7.

To every jockey — past, present, and those still to come — thank you.

The history of racing in the Northern Territory didn't start with a strategy document or a brand refresh. It started with people: locals, enthusiasts, passionate community members, who decided that Alice Springs deserved world-class racing.

Decades later, Alice Springs Turf Club is still standing on that foundation. Still community-first. Still proud of where it comes from. Still showing up.

We think that's worth preserving. And we think you do too.

Leading apprentice. Red Centre raised.

Lek Maloney is the 2025–26 Alice Springs Jockeys' Premiership leading apprentice — and what a season it's been. 25 wins. 126 starts. The kind of campaign that doesn't happen without grit.

But the numbers only tell half the story.
Lek grew up right here in Alice Springs. He first climbed aboard a horse at 13 — not in a lesson, not in a yard under supervision — he jumped on an unbroken yearling and held on by the rug. Courage that makes a good jockey

After years of trackwork, trials in Alice, Adelaide and WA, a near-career-ending injury in Albany that had his family holding their breath — none of it stopped him.

In October, 2022, Lek guided Arrogant Miss to a three-length win at Pioneer Park. Ride number six. Winner number one. His mother Rose and father Andrew Maloney were in the stands, and weren't the only ones getting emotional.

This was a breakout season for Lek with no misunderstanding. Lek was here to win!

Congratulations, Lek — Pioneer Park is proud of you.

Some traditions are worth slowing down for.

Before the barriers open and the first race begins, we take a moment to recognise the people who have dedicated their lives to our sport.

Jockeys are more than competitors. They're teammates, mentors, horsemen and horsewomen, friends, family, and an important part of the story of racing in Central Australia. Their courage, commitment and passion have helped shape the community we know today, both on and off the track.

This Saturday, we proudly honour that legacy as we mark Jockeys Trust Remembrance Day—celebrating those who have ridden before us, recognising those still in the saddle, and remembering the mates and memories that will always be part of our racing family.

It's also Seniors Day in the Pavilion, where laughter, bingo, great conversations and familiar faces will fill the room. Because some of the best race day memories aren't just made on the track—they're shared around a table with friends, across generations, and within a community that continues to show up for one another.

Then, from 12:49pm, the gates open for an exciting seven-race program:

Champions aren't defined by one race. They're remembered for the seasons they build.

Week after week. Meeting after meeting. Horse after horse.

While every race starts with a fresh set of barriers, the journey to a Trainer Premiership is built long before race day. It's the early mornings, the quiet confidence, the difficult decisions, the setbacks, the celebrations, and the unwavering belief in every horse that walks into the stable.

This season, Kerry Petrick and her team once again proved why they're among the Territory's very best.

The numbers speak for themselves. This season: 67 wins from 346 starts. Horses in the placings more than half the time. A win rate that any trainer in the country would be proud of. That's not luck. That's a horsewoman/horseman at the very top of their game.
The highlight came on the biggest stage of them all.

🏆 Magic Defense stormed to victory in the 2026 Ladbrokes Alice Springs Cup, delivering one of the most memorable wins of the Carnival. The mare produced a stunning upset under Stan Tsaikos, giving Kerry her long-awaited Alice Springs Cup victory—a moment she described as one of the greatest of her career.

But premierships aren't won on one afternoon.

Throughout the season, Kerry's stable continued to deliver, with horses like Venting, Magic Defense, Bahama Bay and many others consistently flying the stable colours and collecting feature race victories across Pioneer Park. The stable's depth, consistency and professionalism culminated in another well-deserved Alice Springs Turf Club Trainer Premiership.

Behind every winner is an incredible team of owners, track riders, stable staff, strappers, jockeys, family and supporters who all play their part. This premiership belongs to every one of them.

From everyone at the Alice Springs Turf Club, congratulations Kerry on an outstanding season and a thoroughly deserved 2025/26 Trainer Premiership.

We can't wait to see what your stable achieves next.

Congratulations, Kerry Petrick.

Some stories in racing are about speed. This one is about something that takes a lot longer to build.

The Alice Springs Turf Club is proud to congratulate Paul Denton on taking out the 2025/26 jockey premiership — claimed in the most fitting way possible, on the final race day of the season, when it mattered most.

Going into Sunday, Paul needed two wins to take the title. He rode five races. He won three.
Luskin Hero. River Frost. Flying Start — in the Remembering Mikala Club Handicap — the ride that sealed it.

But the real story of Paul Denton isn't just what happened on Sunday. It's what happened across nearly three decades of racing in the Northern Territory.
Paul has been a fixture of NT racing since his apprentice days — when he first started riding for the Petrick family. Not Kerry. Kerry's mum. Their first race together as a Petrick-Denton combination was in Darwin in February 1997. That partnership has endured through seasons, through victories, through the full sweep of a racing life lived and loved in the Red Centre.
This season, that same partnership — Paul in the saddle, Kerry Petrick in the trainer's stall — delivered both of them a premiership in the same year.

That's not a coincidence. That's what loyalty, trust, and thirty years of shared mornings at the track looks like when it all comes together.

To Paul — from everyone at the Alice Springs Turf Club, from the owners, trainers, staff, and every fan who has cheered you home over the years — this one is yours. Thoroughly, completely, deservedly yours.
Champion jockey. Red Centre legend.

That winning feeling
There’s nothing quite like seeing your horse cross the line first.

The excitement.
The cheers.
The celebrations trackside.

But let’s settle it…
How do you pick your favourite horse?

Is it the jockey colours?
The horse’s name?
A lucky number?
The way they look in the mounting yard?
Or are you the one in the group who studies every little detail?

Everyone has their own race day ritual.
And that’s part of the fun.

Tell us below… what’s your winning system?

There are racetracks across Australia. And then there's this one.

Set against the ancient spine of the MacDonnell Ranges, Alice Springs Turf Club isn't competing with city racing. It's in a completely different category. One where the landscape is part of the experience. Where the crowd is your community. Where the after-race conversation at the bar lasts longer than the races themselves.

This is outback racing. Raw, real, and unlike anything else in the country.
