Spanish name, Filipino soul—adobo isn’t simply a Spanish dish!”

Verdict: MYTH

Filipino adobo’s name comes from the Spanish word adobar, meaning “to marinate.” However, Filipinos were already preserving and cooking meat with local vinegar and salt; Spanish colonisers later applied their word to this distinct indigenous method. Recipes vary by region, so there is no single “official” adobo.

Strong smell, serious science—buro is fermentation, not spoilage! 🌾🧫”

Verdict: MYTH.

Burong isda is a traditional fermented food, not simply rotten food. Beneficial lactic-acid bacteria transform the salted fish-and-rice mixture, creating its distinctive sour flavour. Researchers have even identified bacteria from burong isda made in Arayat, Pampanga, with promising probiotic potential—although that doesn’t make buro a proven medical treatment.
