From Brisbane to the Barossa 🍷

It was a privilege to be able to be a part of Howard and Cindy’s wedding day in August, as they flew over from Brisbane to celebrate in one of their favorite places in the world - The Barossa Valley.

I got to know Howard and Cindy leading up to the big day over phone and video calls, but when we got to meet in person, it’s still felt like we had known each other for a long time.

They were surrounded by their closest family and friends, and had a ceremony that was what they wanted, including their own personal vows they read to one another, and also making sure that their guest who receded had a nice glass of ch*****ne for the ceremony 🤩.

Wishing nothing but the best for Howard and Cindy and their family in the future!

3 years ago, I started my journey as a marriage celebrant. Before performing weddings in Australia, I was lucky enough to be the marriage celebrant/officiant in Seattle for my sister and brother-in-law, Tessa Helber and Tyson Erickson , the original T&T couple.

Having been asked by lots of friends over the years to MC their weddings, it was a great honor to be asked to perform a different role for such an important event. I have always been very comfortable with public speaking, but this was a new challenge: telling an important story about the couple, but not being the focus while telling that story. I tried follow a simple plan: listen to what the couple want for their ceremony, tell their story, don’t be too funny. Challenge accepted.

From that day in September 2023 and then again in March of 2025 when I was able to perform my first wedding as an Australian Marriage Celebrant in Adelaide, I knew I had found something that I truly loved and wanted to continue to build on. Just being able to be around great people celebrating a great event- no matter if that is the couple, their family and friends in attendance, or the suppliers and vendors who are helping in bringing those amazing days to life.

What documents do you need to get married in Australia? 💍

Before your wedding day, your celebrant will need to confirm your identity and date and place of birth. This could include a passport, birth certificate and photo ID. If you’ve been married previously, you’ll also need evidence that your previous marriage has ended.

I’ll guide you through the whole process, let you know exactly what you need and make sure all of the legal paperwork is ready to go - hopefully taking some of the stress from planning your big day!

And don’t worry, I promise not to judge those passport photos where none of us were allowed to smile. 😂

Amie and Dan’s wedding was a reminder that it’s not just two people who come together in a marriage. It’s also the families, the history and the cultures of each person that are now a part of each person’s life. And it was all of that which was on display for their beautiful wedding ceremony.

While I only helped with the Legals Only ceremony, I was invited to stay and be a part of the traditional wedding ceremony, which had elements of both Dan and Amie’s cultural background.

Passion, dancing, everyone in beautiful attire, while amazing food was coming out of the kitchen for all of the guests.

Wishing Dan and Amie nothing but the best as a married couple!

Meghan and Scott are amazing!

They are a real world example of showing that having the best person by your side can get you through all of life’s challenges and adventures.

Having connected with them early in my days as starting as a celebrant, I was lucky enough to get to know them over the past 17 months - to not just plan their wedding ceremony but get to know them as a couple and their story of how they came together.

Port footy games, Xbox and PlayStation gaming nights, bringing together a blended family and some Bundy along the way to keep everyone sane 😉.

The Adelaide winter weather held up to give them an amazing afternoon, as the sun shone through Adelaide • Function • Event • Venue • for their wedding ceremony.

Two extremely kind and generous individuals and I wish them nothing but the best in their next chapter of life as a married couple!

A popular wedding couple question over my last few ceremony planning meetings: How they should play music during their ceremony if they’re not having a live musician or band.

One simple option is to create a Spotify/Napster/Limewire playlist and play it through your celebrant’s PA system. Most celebrants, myself included, are more than happy to help make this work.

The biggest tip I can give is to assign someone the role of “Ceremony Music Person Number 1” well before the wedding day. While it sounds simple, it’s difficult to perform a ceremony and manage the music at the same time, so having a trusted friend or family member responsible for pressing play is always a good idea.

The most common music moments are your pre ceremony playlist as guests arrive, the processional, signing of the marriage documents, the recessional, and post ceremony music while photos are taking place.

A little planning goes a long way, so get those playlists perfected for your upcoming 2026 Adelaide wedding! 🎵

“Reed, we just want to have a very quick wedding, with just a few family members. What are our options?”

Couples sometimes ask about keeping things simple and just doing the legal side of getting married.

In Australia, there are a few legal requirements that need to be carried out for a marriage to be official: the reading of the monitum and legal vows, signing of the legal documents, and having two approved witnesses present.

A “legals only” ceremony covers all of that in a short and straightforward way, without the full ceremony structure.

For some couples, this is exactly what they’re after- just the two of them (plus witnesses), keeping things relaxed and focused on making it official.

From there, you can celebrate however you like, whether that’s a separate ceremony later, a party with family and friends, or something more low key.

It’s a flexible option that suits couples who want to do things their own way.
