Following an important victory in Round 1️⃣ of the WST Scottish Open Qualifier, 8-time Austrian national champion Florian Nuessle 🇦🇹 now faces Matthew Stevens 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿, one of the most iconic snooker players of the past 30 years, tomorrow (Tuesday, 22 September) at 2pm, as he bids to reach the Main Event in Edinburgh, taking place from December 14–20.

On the final day of the European Billiards and Snooker Association Championships in Sofia, the Shoot-out competition took place — the newest addition to the European Championship programme.

Austria was represented by Mario Bodlos 🇦🇹 and Jérôme Liedtke 🇦🇹. While Jérôme unfortunately suffered a very narrow defeat in the opening round, Mario once again made it through to the Last 32. However, just as in the previous day’s 6 Reds competition, his run came to an end at this stage, resulting in another 17th-place finish.

It is worth noting that the EBSA continues to handle the number of available places at all European Championships with considerable flexibility, but without officially communicating this policy. Making this flexibility more transparent and formally acknowledged would encourage National Governing Bodies to nominate additional players beyond the quotas published in the official invitation.

Nevertheless, Mario’s 17th-place finish remains the highlight of this year’s final EBSA competition from an Austrian perspective. 🇦🇹

Among Austria’s four-player team competing at the European Billiards and Snooker Association 6 Reds Championship, Mario Bodlos 🇦🇹 stands out with a solid performance.

As the runner-up in his group, Mario comfortably secured his place in the knockout stage. After a victory over Eren Gürgöze 🇹🇷 in the first knockout round, he was narrowly defeated by Tomasz Skalski 🇵🇱 in the Last 32.

Josef Wimmer 🇦🇹, who still had a chance to advance going into his final group match, unfortunately suffered another defeat and therefore missed out on qualification for the knockout stage.

Jérôme Liedtke 🇦🇹 and Emil Becker 🇦🇹 both saw their chances of advancing disappear after suffering defeats in their opening two group matches. Jérôme ultimately finished third in his group without having to play his final match, as his opponent failed to show up. Emil, meanwhile, had to accept another very close and unlucky defeat.

For Mario Bodlos, the 6 Reds competition therefore ended with an excellent 17th-place finish — a strong result on the international stage.

While our top amateur athletes are competing at the EBSA Championships in Sofia, Austria's first professional Snooker player, Florian Nuessle 🇦🇹, is in Leicester this week, aiming to qualify for several WST events.

Unfortunately, he has already suffered two defeats in the qualifiers for the Northern Ireland and the International Open. However, he is still in contention for a place in the Scottish Open.

Florian will face Deng Haohui 🇨🇳 on Sunday, September 20, at 2 pm.

On Day 9 of the European Billiards and Snooker Association Championships in Sofia, the Austrian 🇦🇹 squad puts in its most cohesive performance of the tournament so far.

Across the seven matches played in the group stage of the 6 Reds competition today, our players secured two convincing wins alongside two clear defeats. However, in the remaining three matches, none of the deciders went the Austrians’ way. As a result, our team heads into the final day still with good chances of seeing at least three of the four players advance to the knockout stage. However, they will need to make the difference, particularly in the decisive moments and in the close matches, and find a way to turn those situations in their favor.

Unfortunately, Gunter Kulle 🇦🇹 was unable to secure a match win in either the Singles or the Team event on his international ÖSBV debut. However, he was able to demonstrate his potential in individual frames, and there is no doubt that, with the international experience gained from this event, he will be capable of achieving stronger results in future appearances

Gunter will undoubtedly be able to put the impressions and experience he gained at the 2026 European Billiards and Snooker Association Seniors Championships to good use in the upcoming national and international competitions.

Daniel Seyser 🇦🇹 finished 15th in the team event alongside Gunter Kulle on his international debut for the ÖSBV, but clearly missed out on advancing to the knockout stages after two defeats.

In the Singles competition, Daniel managed one match win in his group, but unfortunately also missed out on advancing to the final rounds and finished the competition in 31st place.

Overall, there's a great deal of valuable experience to take away from the 2026 European Billiards and Snooker Association Seniors Championship in Sofia. This experience will certainly benefit Daniel in the coming months and years, both in national competitions and in further international events.
