We are thrilled to share that SEAD’s founder and artistic director, Susan Quinn, has been awarded the Großer Kunstpreis des Landes Salzburg 2025 – the highest cultural distinction of the region.

For over three decades, Susan has shaped Salzburg’s contemporary dance scene with vision, courage, and an unshakable belief in the power of movement. Through SEAD, she has created a home for dancers from all over the world — a place where openness, diversity, and artistic excellence meet.

Thank you to Land Salzburg and Stefan Schnöll, to Angela Glechner, Clemens Panagl and Marie Rötzer for this honourable distinction. It is a celebration of her life’s work, and a celebration of everyone who has shared in this journey: our teachers, alumni, and the global SEAD community 💛

Our Story

In 1993, Susan Quinn's vision was to create SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance) as a centre for training contemporary dancers and choreographers as well as a vibrant space that provides the public performances and education in contemporary dance art. At that time SEAD became one of the first places to offer professional-caliber training for contemporary artists in Austria.

Today, SEAD is a well-known academy with more than 100 international students from over 30 countries who can attend different educational programs: the four year undergraduate-program was recognized as university-level studies in 2001, the postgraduate-programs BODHI PROJECT (for dancers) and I.C.E. (for choreographers) were incorporated to the school-system in 2008; and the one year dance intensive FIRE year was established in 2018.

Since 2008, SEAD is home-base and residency for the internationally touring repertory-company BODHI PROJECT, since 2018 part of the blackmountain non-profit organization.

SEAD is a vibrant meeting point for experimental collaborations, residencies, and performances. As a cultural space open for the general public SEAD offers an educational program for adults, teens and kids, and organizes various events in the field of contemporary dance and performance art to enrich the cultural scene in Salzburg.
