galerie gugging

galerie gugging One of the world’s first addresses for art brut and self-taught art.

The gallery gugging is one of the most important international venues for the presentation and creation of unspoiled, original art with its own formal language. The French artist Jean Dubuffet defined this style as art brut. For 25 years now, the gallery has been exhibiting works by the Gugging Artists and their international colleagues with the aim of making their work more visible within the framework of contemporary art and promoting previously unknown artists.

Gugging is on ORF.

A new documentary by Thomas Fürhapter takes a closer look at the Art Brut Centre Gugging, its history, its current residents, and the remarkable story of how we have become one of the most internationally significant centres for Art Brut in the world.

The film follows daily life in Gugging today while looking back at the artists who shaped its reputation, including August Walla and Johann Hauser. It also touches on the centre's influence beyond Austria, and our artists' impact on David Bowie.

45 minutes well spent. Watch it now on ORF https://on.orf.at/video/14326138/das-system-gugging

Next week Saturday, June 20, Museum Gugging turns 20.

Twenty years of championing Art Brut, of giving space to artists whose work exists outside every convention, and of building one of the most distinctive cultural destinations in Austria.

Congratulations to the entire museum gugging team on this milestone.

galerie gugging is proud to be part of the birthday celebrations. At 4pm, our director Nina Katschnig invites you to an exclusive guided tour of COMICS brut, with personal insights into how the exhibition came together.

Doors open from 11am for a full day of art, encounters, and celebration at the Art Brut Center Gugging.

We look forward to welcoming you next week Saturday.

"Tintin au Bled" by Didier Kassaï.

Three pages from a hand-drawn comic that reimagines Tintin through a Central African lens, placing the well-known character into the landscapes, roads, and daily life of the region Kassaï knows intimately.

It is a conversation between two worlds: visually, socially, and politically. Kassaï handles daily life with warmth, humour, and a confident artistic voice.

On view now as part of "COMICS brut" at galerie gugging, until September 13, 2026.

Step into a world where comics meet art brut.

Four artists, four singular languages.

Manuel Griebler covers his surfaces edge to edge with the cast of the Simpsons and Futurama.
Basel Al-Bazzaz dresses his animal figures in pattern, colour, and character.
Hannes Lehner builds his own dense, comic-driven worlds.
Didier Kassaï brings his watercolour chronicles of Bangui to galerie gugging for the first time.

A selection of works is now available in our online shop.

Comics have the power to communicate across language and culture, with image and text coexisting to enhance narrative.

This summer we emphasize the impact of art brut within the world of comics.

"COMICS brut" opens with a Vernissage on Tuesday, June 2nd at 7pm.

The exhibition brings together four unique voices: Basel Al-Bazzaz, Manuel Griebler, Hannes Lehner, and Didier Kassaï, whose work is shown in Austria for the very first time.

Four ways of drawing the world, sharing the authenticity of life as each artist experiences it.

Join us for the Vernissage on June 2nd, or visit from June 3rd during regular gallery hours.

On May 24, we celebrated the birthdays of two artists whose work continues to speak across decades.

Oswald Tschirtner, whose minimal figures hold silence, solitude, and a profound sense of humanity. And Jaroslav Diviš, whose practice reminds us that creativity is not a phase but a lifelong commitment.

And today, May 25th, we celebrate Nina Katschnig, director of galerie gugging, whose vision, dedication, and deep belief in artists and their work has shaped this gallery into what it is today.

Nina has spent her career advocating for Art Brut and self-taught artists at every level, from intimate gallery conversations to international art fairs. Her work is not just curatorial. It is a form of care.

Happy birthday to three people who, each in their own way, have extended the reach of art brut around the world.
