The gallery gugging is one of the most important international venues for the presentation and creation of unspoiled, original art with its own formal language. The French artist Jean Dubuffet defined this style as art brut. For 25 years now, the gallery has been exhibiting works by the Gugging Artists and their international colleagues with the aim of making their work more visible within the framework of contemporary art and promoting previously unknown artists.

This September at Vienna Contemporary, galerie gugging presents "NATURE. blue & green", a powerful dialogue between two artists of different generations, united by instinct, colour, and an unfiltered connection to the natural world.

🌿 Leopold Strobl, one of the most significant self-taught artists working today, returns to the spotlight after exhibiting at the La Biennale di Venezia in 2024, and is currently being exhibited at Millstart. His small-format, layered drawings are like magnetic portals; quiet, concentrated, and rich with depth.

💙 We’re also proud to welcome Marko Djurdjevic, a bold new voice making his art world debut. His large-scale, gestural oil paintings explore memory and emotion, with deep blues that shift between filter, shield, and healing space.

Together, their works explore nature not as scenery, but as memory, mirror, and metaphor. Blue meets green. Stillness meets motion. Line meets flood.

Visit us at Stand G92 to experience it in person at Vienna Contemporary in September.

🛍️ After the fair, a selection of the exhibited works will be available for purchase in our online shop. https://shop.galeriegugging.com/

Today, we honour the birthday of Heinrich Reisenbauer (1938–2025), whose lifelong dedication to art and quiet precision made a lasting mark on the world of Art Brut.

Born in Kirchau, Austria, Reisenbauer lived and worked at the House of Artists in Gugging from 1986 until his passing. Known for his serial depictions: objects drawn side by side and beneath one another, his works reveal a deep sense of structure, rhythm, and calm. In 1990, he and the Gugging Artists were awarded the prestigious Oskar Kokoschka Prize.

His art is held in major collections including the Museum of Everything (UK), LaM (France), and the Helmut Zambo Collection (Germany).

To mark the occasion, we’re featuring "Umbrellas" (1990), now available as a limited edition museum-quality print.

🖼️ Printed on 250 gsm archival paper
🖨️ Limited to 77 prints
🛒 Available framed or unframed with worldwide shipping

Simone Pellegrini’s work is currently being shown around the world, with recent exhibitions affirming his growing significance in the Art Brut, Outsider Art, and Contemporary Art landscape.

At Millstatt Abbey, as part of Millstart, his intricate, symbolic drawings are part of our summer exhibition.

Tomorrow, July 25 at 20:30 (doors open at 18:00), our gallery director Nina Katschnig will lead a special tour and talk, offering visitors the chance to explore Simone’s work in person, in context to the exhibition and other artists.

Earlier this month, his work was featured during the ADAA CHELSEA TRIBECA GALLERY WALK at Calvin Morris Gallery in New York. And this October, Simone will be represented by Galerie DYS at Outsider Paris, a major moment for an artist whose practice continues to resonate across cultures, continents, and defies categorisation within a wide variety of markets.

Earlier this month, Simone also marked another year in his artistic journey with the celebration of his birthday on July 18th.

We’re proud to walk alongside him and to share several of his available works with you through our online shop.

In Bananas (2003), Oswald Tschirtner transforms the everyday into something quietly profound. With just a few masterful and measured lines and a wash of yellow, he captures form, presence, and meaning, without ever raising his voice.

This original work is an example of Tschirtner’s unmistakable visual language: minimal, deliberate, and deeply relatable.

Available with custom framing options.

📍Once you’ve met Nina, you’ll understand why these nine artworks matter.

In our latest blog, we discuss collecting art with Nina Katschnig, galerie gugging’s director since 2000 and one of the world’s leading voices in Art Brut and self-taught art.

Her curatorial eye has helped shape the international visibility of Gugging artists and their deeply personal, emotionally intelligent works.

To accompany the article, we’ve curated a special collection, "Intimate Territories: Nine Visions from Gugging."

Each piece is A4 or smaller, but don’t let the size fool you—these are bold, raw, and powerful expressions by iconic names like August Walla, Oswald Tschirtner, and Leopold Strobl, as well as emerging talents like Karl Vondal and Johann Korec.

Whether you're just starting your collection or looking to deepen it, these artworks offer an extraordinary way to connect with the Gugging vision.

🎉 Celebrating Arnold Schmidt!

Born on July 16, 1959, in Wiener Neustadt, Arnold Schmidt has been a vital part of the House of Artists in Gugging since 1986.

His work radiates raw energy, filled with figures, bicycles, birds, and aeroplanes bursting to life in bold colour and motion.

Working quickly and instinctively, Schmidt creates scenes that feel both spontaneous and emotionally charged. He uses acrylic, gouache, watercolour, and oil pastels to bring his vibrant visions to life.

Awarded the Oskar Kokoschka Prize in 1990 alongside fellow Gugging Artists, Schmidt’s expressive, dynamic artworks are now part of major collections across Europe.
