This morning, I met Gosa Nagesso, one of the two highest scorers in this year’s Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance Exam (Grade 12 National Exam).

Gosa achieved an extraordinary 589/600, scoring 100/100 both in Mathematics and Physics. He just missed 11 questions out of 600, that placed him as one of the only two students who have ever scored an average of more than 98% in the national exam history.

He followed the very top scorer, Kalid Bashir, who lost only 9 marks (scored an extraordinary 591/600), by a margin of just 2 points.

Gosa and Kalid hailed from Dodola Ifa Boru Boarding School. Nationally, nine of the top ten high scores in this year’s Grade 12 National Exam are from this very school, including one of the two top-scoring girls. They are the first batch of the school, showing how much efforts the teachers, administrative staffs, and students put to rise the school to national prominence.

Meeting this bright young mind was truly inspiring. He rose from humble background from rural part of Shashamanne from a family of subsistent farmers in Caatimannaa Jangallaa village. He aspire to be a software developer, developing a program (app) that can be helpful in education, health, connectivity, etc. His extraordinary achievement will inspire youths across the nation, and he will be a good role model for youths in his villages and beyond.
