The fishing industry in Mauritania serves as one of the West African countries most strategic economic cornerstones, fueled by the cold-water upwellings off the Atlantic coast.

Mauritania’s coastline is a colossal 754km complemented by a 234,000 square kilometre Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) representing one of the most underutilised maritime economic assets not only in West Africa, but across the continent.

The challenge for Mauritania is not simply exploiting its abundant marine resources, but capturing a greater share of the economic value they generate through local processing, employment, maritime services and investment in supporting infrastructure.

The future looks bright for maritime education instructors, maritime administration officers and seafarers across the Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) member states.

MOWCA has secured 48 Indonesian government-sponsored training opportunities for maritime education instructors, maritime administration officers and seafarers, with the new development promising to enhance professional opportunities, strengthen maritime education and advance the region’s maritime sector.

According to MOWCA Secretary General Dr. Paul Adalikwu, the three capacity-building programmes are scheduled for November 2026, with the government of Indonesia offering the scholarships within the framework of the organisation’s cooperation with its international partners.

Kenyan MPs are questioning the Sh8.3 billion (approximately US$13.9 million) cost of a 1.8-kilometre road project at the Port of Mombasa.

The Transport and Infrastructure Committee has raised concerns over the project’s design, materials and procurement process, with a special audit expected.

The scrutiny comes as Mombasa recorded 45.45 million tonnes of cargo in 2025.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) have launched a port management training programme, seeking to strengthen the professional skills of Kenya’s port workforce and the wider port community.

Dubbed ‘Train for Trade,’ the programme will provide trainees with comprehensive exposure to modern port management practices, and equip them with practical skills in international trade and transport, port operations, commercial management, financial management, performance measurement, environmental sustainability, and human resource development.

The programme will see port employees trained on 18 modules on port operations and management, with 20 staff drawn from various divisions currently undergoing the training. According to the plan, the officers will then be eligible to become trainers and facilitate similar training in various countries where the program runs.

Nigeria is exploring cooperation with Norway on satellite-based vessel tracking to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, as the federal government seeks to curb losses estimated at US$450 million annually, and protect the country’s marine resources.

Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, discussed the proposed cooperation with Norway’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Svein Baera, during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Monday, October 12, 2026.

“The protection of our waters is an environmental responsibility and an economic imperative,” Oyetola said in a statement shared by the Nigeria National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
