🇿🇦 Mandela Day 67 Minutes in Action with Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride 🌈

Today, in the true spirit of Nelson Mandela Day, Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride spent our 67 minutes giving back by visiting Amava Skills and Education an inspiring community project based in KTC, Gugulethu, dedicated to supporting vulnerable children. 💫

We had the joy of preparing and serving a warm, nourishing meal to the children. In return, they shared their hearts with us through incredible performances of dance and music that left us moved and hopeful. 💃🏽🎶❤️

We extend our deepest gratitude to Rev. Ndemnka and the congregation of the Bantu Methodist Church of Southern Africa for offering their church as a home for this life-changing initiative. 🙏🏽

Let’s continue to live the spirit of uTata Madiba through service, compassion, and building unity in our communities. ✊🏽

Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride Observes Mandela Day 67 Minutes – A Community Act of Care and Solidarity

Today, 18 July 2025, Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride observed Mandela Day 67 Minutes through a compassionate act of service at Urban Rural Development and Capacity Building, a vital local organisation supporting chronic patients in Langa with warm meals and psychosocial care.

This year’s Mandela Day activity was made possible through a meaningful partnership with Shosholoza Finance (PTY) and the support of the Langa Community Advice Services team. Together, we brought donations of food items, assisted in meal preparation, and spent quality time with the beneficiaries many of whom rely on daily nutrition before taking critical medication.

The act of service was not only about giving but also about listening, learning, and reaffirming the values of dignity, compassion, and community that Madiba stood for. We were moved by the resilience of Urban Rural Development’s team, who work tirelessly to ensure no person goes without food or care.

As Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride, we saw the urgent need for continued support, especially in the form of:

Non-perishable food donations

Gas and cooking supplies

Cleaning materials

Kitchen equipment

We appeal to individuals, local businesses, and stakeholders to extend their hand in support of this essential service. Contributions will go directly to sustaining the nutrition and care of our community's most vulnerable.

🌈 Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride Statement on International Non-Binary Day – 14 July 2025 🌈

Today, on International Non-Binary Day, Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride joins the global community in celebrating and uplifting the lives, identities, and experiences of all non-binary people.

Non-binary people are not new they are part of our history, our families, our communities. Yet, in many places, including our townships, non-binary individuals continue to be marginalized, misunderstood, or erased. Today, we say: You are seen. You are valid. You belong.

As a movement rooted in justice, inclusion, and dignity, we call on all community members, leaders, educators, and institutions to:

Recognize the rich diversity of gender identities beyond the binary of male and female;

Affirm and respect non-binary people by using inclusive language and pronouns;

Challenge homophobia, transphobia, and all forms of discrimination, especially in our townships where violence and stigma remain deeply rooted.

Let us use this day not only to celebrate, but also to educate, transform, and heal. Let’s encourage our townships to be inclusive, to open their hearts and minds, and to embrace all members of the LGBTQIA+ community with love and humanity.

We at Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride remain committed to creating safe, supportive spaces where everyone including our non-binary siblings can thrive.

Langa LGBTQIA Pride Statement on IDAHOBIT – 17 May 2025

Today, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Inters*xism, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), Langa LGBTQIA Pride stands in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ individuals across our community, our country, and the world. We affirm the dignity, humanity, and rights of every person, regardless of s*xual orientation, gender identity, or s*x characteristics.

In Langa, we know too well the pain caused by silence, stigma, and exclusion. But we also know the power of unity, visibility, and action. IDAHOBIT is a reminder that our diversity is a strength, and our voices must continue to challenge hate, discrimination, and violence.

We recommit ourselves to building a safe, inclusive, and affirming community where every person can live openly and proudly. We call on families, schools, churches, workplaces, and government to take active steps in creating safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ people. Let us stand together against all forms of phobia and prejudice.

Let love, justice, and equality lead the way.

Today, we honor and celebrate all mothers biological, adoptive, grandmothers, aunties, guardians, and every mother figure who nurtures, protects, and uplifts.

At Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride, we recognize the strength and resilience of mothers in our community, including those who support, raise, and stand proudly with LGBTQIA+ 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ children. Your love makes the world safer, kinder, and more just.

We especially salute the q***r mothers, trans mothers, and those who mother in non-traditional ways your existence and care are revolutionary. Thank you for showing us that love knows no boundaries.

To every mother who continues to fight for dignity, equality, and a better future for all we see you, we celebrate you, and we love you.

Statement from Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride on the Brutal Attack of Qhawe Ndabeni

Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride stands in deep solidarity and outrage following the horrific and violent attack on Qhawe Ndabeni, a young and openly gay boy from Port St Johns. We are heartbroken and enraged that Qhawe was subjected to such brutal hate and violence simply because of who he is.

According to reports, Qhawe was assaulted by a group of men people known to him after enduring homophobic harassment. He was accused of “teaching their kids imikhuba yobu gay” and was violently beaten, abducted, and thrown from a moving vehicle. This is not only a hate crime it is a blatant and inexcusable act of attempted murder.

Let it be clear: no person deserves to be harmed, violated, or dehumanized because of their s*xual orientation or identity. We demand swift and decisive action from law enforcement. The perpetrators must be brought to justice without delay.

We call on civil society, LGBTQIA+ organizations, the justice system, and all South Africans to rise up against hate, speak out against homophobia, and protect q***r lives.

Qhawe deserves justice. Our communities deserve safety.

A Heartfelt Thank You!

Our dialogue, “How Does Culture and Faith View Gender and Sexuality in Today’s Society?”, held on Saturday, 26 April 2025 at Langa Ethiopia Episcopal Church, was a powerful space of truth-telling, healing, and deep reflection.

We are truly grateful to everyone who joined us, and most especially to our incredible panelists who shared their personal journeys and powerful insights:

On behalf of Langa LGBTQIA+ Pride, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who stood in solidarity during our peaceful picket for justice, human rights, and the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

💜 A special thank you to our community members, activists, civil society organizations, and allies who joined us in demanding accountability and protection for all vulnerable individuals. Your voices amplified the call for justice and reminded us that change is possible when we stand together!

🙌 We also appreciate our partners, organizers, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this gathering possible. Your dedication continues to inspire hope and action in the fight for equality, dignity, and safety for all.
