A Mile in Her Shoes

Shame, Stigma and the Silent Battles Women Carry

Good morning, ladies.

Before we begin, I have a question.

Have you ever heard someone say,
"Walk a mile in my shoes."

It is one of the most common phrases we use when we want people to understand us. It is our way of saying, "Please don't judge me until you've lived what I've lived."
And I agree.
Compassion matters, Context matters.
People carry stories we cannot see.
But today, I want to ask a different question.

Do you know where your shoes are taking you?

Because asking someone to walk in your shoes assumes that you know the journey yourself.
What if you've been walking for years... but you've never stopped to ask why you chose that road?

What if you've changed jobs, changed relationships, changed cities, changed hairstyles, changed churches, changed wardrobes, changed friendship circles... yet somehow you keep arriving at the same emotional destination?

Perhaps it isn't the shoes. Perhaps it is the direction.

I often deliberate that self forgiveness/ living a shameless life and healing is not about becoming someone else.
It is about finally meeting the person you've been all along. That meeting cannot happen if we spend our lives running, from pain, from disappointment, or from ourselves.

During my years of service, I have learned something fascinating, that Human beings rarely repeat experiences. We repeat patterns.
And patterns are loyal. They follow us into boardrooms, Into marriages, Into parenting.
Into leadership, Into our friendships.
Into our businesses, Into our relationship with money, Into the conversations we avoid.
Into the silence we keep.

The strange thing about patterns is that they often feel like personality.

You hear someone say,

"I'm just a perfectionist."

Maybe.

Or maybe perfection became your safest way to avoid criticism.

Someone says,

"I'm fiercely independent."

Perhaps.

Or perhaps dependence once hurt you so deeply that self-reliance became your survival strategy.

Someone says,

"I'm always busy."

Busy doing what?

Sometimes productivity is purpose. Sometimes productivity is an excellent hiding place.

I know that makes some of us slightly uncomfortable.

Good.

Growth usually arrives wearing uncomfortable shoes.

The women I am talking to are accomplished.
You have built careers.
Raised families.
Led organisations.
Managed homes.
Sat on boards.
Signed contracts.
Closed deals.
People look at you and think, "She has it all together."
And perhaps you do.

But emotional wellbeing does not automatically arrive with financial wellbeing.
A designer handbag cannot carry unresolved grief.
A promotion does not silence shame.
A beautiful home cannot always become a peaceful home.

Achievement is wonderful.
But achievement and healing are not the same thing.
Some of the most successful women I have met are still negotiating with little girls who never believed they were enough.

Isn't it interesting?

The child leaves.
The little girl often doesn't.
She simply learns to wear heels.
Some of us are still trying to earn love.
Some are still trying to earn approval.
Some are still trying to prove that we deserve to take up space.

And somewhere along the way, survival became so familiar that peace started feeling unfamiliar.

Now let's talk about shame.

People often confuse shame with guilt.
Guilt says, "I made a mistake." Shame says, "I am the mistake."

One corrects behaviour. The other attacks identity. Shame is incredibly intelligent.
It doesn't shout. It whispers.
"Don't speak." "Don't ask for help."
"Smile." "You've got this." "Everyone else is coping."
"If they knew the real you, they would leave."
And because shame speaks so quietly, we often mistake it for our own voice.

Then society joins the conversation.
Society tells women they should be ambitious, but not intimidating.
Successful, but always available.
Strong, but soft.
Independent, but never "too independent."
Confident, but humble enough not to make anyone uncomfortable.

Ladies…

At some point we have to ask,

Who exactly are we performing for?

Because performance is exhausting.
Authenticity, although frightening, is surprisingly restful.

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that people don't always need fixing.
Sometimes they simply need permission to stop pretending.

You know what I find amusing?

We spend fortunes on skincare.
And almost nothing on emotional maintenance.

We schedule meetings months in advance.
Yet postpone difficult conversations with ourselves for years.

We upgrade our phones every two years.
But some of us have been operating from emotional software installed when we were eight years old.

No wonder life keeps buffering.

And here's where I want to challenge us.

Perhaps the question is no longer,
"Will you walk a mile in my shoes?"

Perhaps the better question is,
"Why have I been walking this road for so long?"

Who gave me these shoes?

Who told me that exhaustion was a badge of honour?
Who convinced me that asking for help was weakness?
Who taught me that love had to be earned?
Which beliefs belong to me…
…and which ones am I simply carrying because they were handed down through generations?

This is where healing begins.
Not with blame, guilt and shame.
But with curiosity.

Curiosity is one of the greatest acts of self-compassion.

Instead of asking,

"What's wrong with me?" We begin asking,
"What happened to me?"

And then something even more powerful.

"What can happen for me from here?"

There is a beautiful difference.

One question keeps you trapped in your past.
The other opens the door to your future.
The truth is, every woman here is carrying something.
Some burdens have names. Some don't.
Some are inherited. Some are self-imposed.
Some are visible. Most are invisible.

Yet every single one of us possesses something even greater.

The capacity to choose differently.

That is what emotional wellbeing really is.
It is not the absence of struggle. But the presence of awareness.

Awareness gives us choice. Choice gives us freedom. Freedom gives us peace.

And peace...
Peace is perhaps the greatest luxury any woman can own.

At BYL Solutions, we believe that transformation does not happen because someone gives you better answers. It happens because someone asks you better questions.

So today I leave you with a few questions

Where are your shoes taking you?

Are you living intentionally or are you simply reacting to yesterday?

What are you still carrying that no longer belongs to you?

What would become possible if you stopped trying to prove your worth and simply accepted it?
And finally...

If you met the younger version of yourself today...
Would she recognise the woman you've become?

Or would she quietly whisper,

"You've survived beautifully... but now it's time to start living."

Ladies, healing is not a destination reserved for broken people.
Healing is the lifelong decision to become more fully yourself.
Not the version shaped by fear, shame or shaped by other people's expectations.

It is the version that has always existed beneath the noise.

Now, before asking anyone to walk a mile in your shoes...

Pause.

Stand still.

Look down.

And ask yourself,

"Do I know where these shoes are taking me?"
Because once you know the direction...
You no longer need to convince the world to understand your journey.

You simply begin walking with purpose.

It has been a full month since our “Personal Clarity “ Workshop.

We are still pondering on the learnings that inform how we live today.

A lesson …..

Understanding that each and every decision you make today sets an appointment with your future, in-fact all that you did created today and all that you do today creates your tomorrow.

Active participation, not inspirational talks.
Actively building the version of yourself you want to become.

I am working on a series called Finding Me. Life, professional observations, learnings and experiences have taught me that the pressures and experiences of life tend to disconnect us from who we truly are. We spend most of our time walking around, trying to figure things out, feeling like we have boarded the wrong train, but because it has travelled so far, we feel it is impossible to get off.

This workshop is meant to assist you in finding yourself, it is meant to help you create space and find time to deal with all the experiences, emotions and feelings you have been hoarding, the ones you have kept locked away.

"Somewhere between surviving, performing, pleasing others and meeting expectations... I lost myself."

It's time to find your way back.
A transformational personal clarity experience designed to help you reconnect with your authentic self, and intentionally design your next chapter.
Because the most important person you will ever discover is you.

Helping you gain clarity, align with your values, and live intentionally.

Stop living by default. Start living by design.

"Personal development starts when you stop living on autopilot.
For the next 15 days, we're asking: Who are you when no one needs anything from you?

We are almost sold out.
