On 27 June Chartwell Centre for Coding & Robotics hosted a free four-hour session for learners from Diepsloot as part of its Youth Day initiative. The Centre provides fun coding, electronics and robotics sessions for kids between the ages of 5-12. Alan Vesty founded the centre in September 2021. Alan explained that this was after working for a major UK university for around 14 years, during which time he had helped show schools and thousands of teachers throughout the African continent simple, practical ways to integrate technology into their classrooms. Alan says, “It was meaningful and important work, but I always felt the pace of change was too slow. This was illustrated during the height of the pandemic when many learners were simply left stranded and without access to education. One day I re-read a quote from Gandhi - ‘Be the change you want to see’ – this propelled me to take the daunting step (during lockdown) to open a small centre that would directly help to incubate a homegrown tech base and enable kids from all walks of life to participate meaningfully in a world which is transforming rapidly due to the effects of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. On Youth Day 2022, I met a highly talented youth choir group from Diepsloot, Harmonious Inj3ctors. They were very curious about my centre. When I showed them around, I could see their hunger to learn and participate. When I offered to run a free in-depth session for their group, they broke into spontaneous song and dance. It was very touching. Two weeks later, I was able to make good on that Youth Day promise – around twenty kids spent a few hours with me today exploring robots, computer components, assembling their first lines of code and much more. It was such a great success, that afterwards I chatted to the leadership group and have agreed to make this a regular free programme for all these awesome kids, who will be back next week!” Chartwell Centre for Coding & Robotics is based at The Stables Village Centre in Chartwell, near Broadacres.
