From nuptials to returning friends of the bridal couple, from baptisms to family holidays enjoying local outdoor events, to celebrating major anniversaries and birthdays, Calderwood Hall Guest House is your country home, welcoming you back, time and again, to make precious memories. The venue allows for personal styles to be reflected in the reception. The pretty and tranquil thatched stained glass chapel can seat 150 guests. It is multidenominational and we welcome weddings from all cultural groups. For those who’ve always dreamed of having an outdoor ceremony, there is a forest alongside the dam. We also have the jasmine-covered arbour in our front garden which allows for guests to be seated on the grassed lawn with the Manor House behind them. Our accommodation has been graded as AA Highly Recommended and we can sleep up to 82 guests on the estate. Our Manor House has five oversized luxury en-suite bedrooms, all exquisitely themed for guests to enjoy the unique character of each. Our Guest House is surrounded by beautiful gardens with a gazebo and ornamental fountain, dams and forests. Set in the gardens are a further 23 en-suite garden rooms. These may be more suitable for larger groups or family getaways, being located a little further from the Manor.

Feel good story with my faith in our youth restored !! On Monday Pinky who is my right hand lady came to me to tell me that one of her neighbors has come to her with a cell phone her son had found on the field next to our dam when he came to swim on Sunday . As I was not here on Sunday he took the phone home and gave it to his mom . He told her that he picked it up at Calderwood and sure it must belong to one of our Wedding Guests who had their creative shoot at the dam on Saturday . I checked with our guests and they assured me none of them had lost their phone . So this youngster kept the phone on charge waiting for someone to phone and he could then find out who the owner was ! Thankfully the owner did call and was so grateful that her phone had been found and collected from him with a nice little reward . We sent him a cold drink and choccie today to thank him for his honesty and for using his initiative to track down the owner . So grateful thanks to Kwanele Zuma I am so proud of you and know that with your honesty you have a bright future ahead of you ! Thank you thank you thank you !

Such a beautiful wedding celebration of Lucy and Mickeys Union at Calderwood Hall on 10/10/26. A lovely morning wedding with canapés and cocktails in the garden followed by a scrumptious Harvest Table Luncheon in the main hall . Lucy and Micky chose a very casual seating arrangement with a combination of Lounge Pods , Small Tables and Cocktail Tables for a very casual set up . Lucy had made her own wedding gown with a 5m train , so in keeping with the vintage style of Calderwood Hall . Well done Lucy on your beautiful gown it really was a wow moment when you came down the staircase !

Green Walls and the Curse of the Stained Glass Dome (part 5)

Four new floor-to-ceiling windows went in, including a beautiful signature window with its own built-in cross. And the view? Absolutely spectacular. Inhlosane Mountain in the background. Our English Garden in the foreground. It was magnificent.

Out went the old Tree of Life. In came a completely new altar area with rock-clad walls.

And then we found our chandelier. The Banana Leaf chandelier had been rescued from the old TV Lounge. Where it had looked… well… Let’s just say it looked “very 1970s hotel reception.” But we weren’t throwing anything away. Oh no. That was one of our rules. “You never know when you’re going to need it.” We resprayed it gold. And suddenly …Avant-garde! Up it went in the Chapel.

We also rescued columns and scrolls from the junkyard and somehow managed to turn all this old stuff into something that looked rather elegant. The Chapel had finally become a beautiful, happy place of worship.

We thought we were finished.

We were not finished.

Enter…Uncle Mike the handyman and eternal dreamer and creator of “stuff”! Uncle Mike took one look at the Chapel entrance and decided that he could improve it. The ivy-clad thatched roof looked absolutely gorgeous. Romantic. Rustic. Very Calderwood. There was only one small problem. The thatch underneath the ivy had rotted and become a haven for little Natal Bush Snakes! Which meant that when it rained, the bride and her father could stand underneath the entrance and experience something normally associated with a waterpark. Not ideal. Especially when Dad is trying to look proud and is emotional……and is actually standing in a puddle. So, off came the old roof. In went a beautiful new wooden slatted roof. Then a new wooden floor.

And finally…
VOILÀ!

The Chapel was finished.

Honestly. Finished. No more green walls. No more leaking Perspex dome. No more falling stained glass pieces. No more plastic patio chairs. No more dodgy carpet. No more leaking entrance. And, most importantly…No more frantic painting the night before a wedding! Our little Chapel had finally become the beautiful space we had always dreamed it could be. And every time I see a bride walking down that aisle, I think back to the days when we were washing green algae off the walls and wondering whether the paint would dry before the wedding.

Happy days. Happy brides.

And a Chapel that finally stopped trying to drown them!
Mission accomplished!

Green Walls and the Curse of the Stained Glass Dome (part 4)

Then we looked at the windows. Four of them were, shall we say, not exactly architectural highlights. So out they came. In went the most beautiful stained-glass panels of little Kingfishers and Koi, designed by our very own Marketing Queen, Kelly, and made and installed by Gill from Glass Cuttings. And suddenly… WOW! We thought we were the cats’ whiskers! We probably stood there for half an hour admiring them. You know that feeling when you’ve done something to your house and you keep walking past it just to look at it? That was us. Every morning:

“Morning, Chapel!”

“Morning, Kingfisher!”

“Still looking good!”

Then came 2012.
We decided to rebuild the main Function Room. But that’s another story… Because when you own an old building, there is no such thing as: “We’ll just do a little renovation.” There is only: “While we’re at it…” And that phrase has probably cost me more money than anything else in my life! Anyway, our dear Aunty Joan took one look at the Chapel and said: “It’s looking awesome…” Now, when somebody says “but…”, you know your wallet is about to suffer. “…but the altar area needs serious work.” And before we knew it, we were rebuilding again.

Green Walls and the Curse of the Stained Glass Dome! (Part 3)

Next came the white plastic patio chairs.

Now there is absolutely nothing wrong with a white plastic patio chair. Unless you are trying to create a beautiful wedding chapel. I remember inheriting the most awful white covers that graced these chairs on wedding day and didn’t forget being told that Daphney does the most beautiful bows on the backs!!! Not gonna happen on my watch! They had to go.

We replaced them with beautiful wooden pews. And I found the most talented carpenter in the middle of the sugar-cane fields in Wartburg. He was making furniture for Weatherly's at the time and agreed to make our pews.

Suddenly the Chapel looked like a Chapel. Not a Chapel attached to the braai area. A proper Chapel!

Then we looked at the carpet. And realised that the carpet was possibly the only thing in the building that looked worse than the dome. Out it came. In went terracotta tiles with beautiful blue mosaic tiles placed at intervals down the aisle. Now we were getting somewhere...
