Last week I called for the inclusion of more wrestling holds in the repertoire of today's wrestlers. I said I longed for "holds applied with 'great force' to show an aggressive wrestler inflicting maximum pain to a howling opponent. It's time to expand move sets from - strike, kick, fly, repeat- in every match. "
-
Two days later I watched the main event of Night One - Summerslam 2025 between CM Punk and Gunther. Early in the match I saw them use a chin lock, knee drop, hammer lock, abdominal stretch, wrist lock, sharpshooter and headlock. The crowd followed along and expressed appreciation. While my post had no influence, I smiled at what I was witnessing.

NEXT WEEKEND WILL BE THE 2ND ANNUAL BRUNO SAMMARTINO TRIBUTE SHOW IN HIS BIRTH TOWN OF PIZZOFERRATO, ITALY. THIS IS THE PRESS RELEASE FOR THE SHOW:

The Living Legend. Uno is Bruno.

Back in 1935, Pizzoferrato gave birth to the man who would become one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time.

Bruno Sammartino was the greatest World Champion in the history of the sport, holding a record reign of 2,803 days – still unbeaten to this day.

The magical arena of New York, Madison Square Garden, witnessed 188 consecutive sell-outs thanks to the endless charisma of “our” Bruno.

In 2013, he was inducted into the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) Hall of Fame by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and in 2017, Pizzoferrato honored him with a statue in his name.

On Saturday, August 16th at 9:30 PM, Pizzoferrato returns to the world map of Professional Wrestling to once again honor the memory of Bruno Sammartino with the second edition of the world-class tournament, featuring some of today’s top athletes, with the prestigious trophy – won last year by Italian Fabio Ferrari – up for grabs.

THE PROGRAM

In the beautiful setting of Pizzoferrato, the second annual BRUNO SAMMARTINO WORLD GRAND PRIX will take place as a world exclusive.

Four of the very best professional wrestlers from around the globe will battle in two single-elimination matches, with the winners advancing to face each other in the night’s Main Event for the prestigious trophy.

The contenders:

Fabio Ferrari (Italy)

Trained by Marty Jones, has wrestled in 25 countries worldwide, current EWA Intercontinental Champion

Mulligan (Wales)

Over 2 meters tall and 130 kg, trained at the NJPW Academy in Los Angeles, competed in GCW

Heimo Ukonselka (Finland)

Finnish FCF wrestler, former Slam! Wrestling champion, competed in Japan for SMASH

Sheik El Sham (India)

Seen in World of Sport and top UK promotions

Also in action, Abruzzo’s pride Miss Monica, born in Caprara d’Abruzzo and the first Italian female wrestler to step into a WWE ring, will face England’s Alexxis Falcon, a well-known name in major promotions such as Rev Pro, in an all-women’s contest.

And that’s not all – many surprises for all fans!

Two hours of non-stop action to celebrate “our” Bruno Sammartino with a global-scale event that will make Pizzoferrato the Wrestling capital of the world for one day.

You know what I miss in many of today's matches? Basic wrestling holds. Holds causing major damage. Not rest holds. That's lazy. But holds applied with "great force" to show an aggressive wrestler inflicting maximum pain to a howling opponent. It's time to expand move sets from - strike, kick, fly, repeat- in every match.
-
How about incorporating effectively applied basic wrestling holds? Even just as transitional moves. How about if we start with a fundamental?
THE HAMMERLOCK
>Punk applies a hammerlock on John Cena
>Verne Gagne applies a hammerlock on his opponent.
>Challenger Wilber Snyder twists champion Lou Thesz with the flying hammerlock.
>Flair adds a twist to his hammerlock to exert more pain

The late "Pl***oy" Buddy Rose, only 24 at this time, is interviewed in 1978 as part of a profile on pro wrestling by a local San Francisco news channel. This video is pretty good at capturing the feel of the 1970's wrestling culture.

In the early 1980's Tony Garea was the guy who advised me when I bought my first house. I had intro'd Tony through five tag team championships over 10 years [with Haystacks Calhoun (1 time), Dean Ho (1 time), Larry Zbyszko (1 time), and Rick Martel (2 times] plus he was skilled in building, buying and selling properties. It's always great to catch up with him.
