Camp cooking has always been one of my favourite things, ever since I watched mum cook damper in the camp oven (and countless other things), when we camped as kids. I still remember cooking “Governor Phillips Ham Surprise” at Girl Guide camps (a name and a dish wrong on so many levels I can’t even, but it was the cooking skills that were important, I grew to understand what was wrong with the rest)... I love watching my kids cook by the fire, skills for a lifetime, and the memories.. and they generally eat it all too ..

How did the hot-smoked salmon turn out... pretty darn good.

Cured in beetroot spices and gin for a cool 24, then hot-smoked over cherry and plum wood. And excuse to rake the coals with my Dad and smoke the midgies out of my (and all my neighbours houses - sorry!)

All the pretty colours... hot smoking some flipping delicious King Ora salmon tonight. Cured in beetroot and gin and some in water buffalo spice rub - cause what else is there to do on Christmas Eve except down Geographe Riesling and stand by the fire 🔥

I’m just leaving this right here. There’s not been much fire, cooking or catering for me since Covid but I did land a fab job blazing a sustainability trail that I’m super proud of. And today, on my first week of leave we took the kids to a beautiful community farm where we played for hours and watched butterflies and hunted all kinds of fruit trees for fun. Then home for fire lighting - Alfredo ignited with his flint stick, no matches or firefighters, and extended mudflat play until after dark and now a very dirty bathtub!! But happy exhausted kids all asleep in our new cosy little home.
Days like these make my soul shine, if you’re quick you can spot me on the rings too, but the kids in the swing at warp speed cracks me up! 😂

There was the Rayburn wood burning stove, lit at 10am, there was the warm home filled with our two families who’ve not seen each other for a few months, there was the wine (of course), there was the .babes biodynamic organic pork from Sophie, there was regeneratively farmed cauliflower, cabbage and ginger from , there was sweet potatoes from the garden, there was conversation, there was love and friendship, and there was contentment. So grateful for everything that was last night and that we were lucky enough to share it

Something primal? Fleshy? Basic? My clay teacher might use the word “elemental”, I’d venture at “daggy”... latenightpotterywithheadlamp.. scratching my way into the dermal layer of terracotta, already too dry (I have no idea what I’m doing), slugging malbec and scoffing week-old rye flour brownies (surprisingly better than when I first made them)... I. Am. So. Rock. And. Roll.
Tis fun tho, an exercise in mindfulness, observing the observer and all things ancient. Simple. The neighbourhood unfolds; someone doing circle work in their car a few streets away, a learning trumpeter, a Friday night enthusiast telling a partner they suck at everything... drunk incomprehensible conversation, the train whistle blows...

Endless pursuit of delicious ways to drink gin... have a bunch of feijoas in the boxes lately and I will admit I didn’t really know what to do with them, until.... da-da-da-daaaaahhh
“The Lost in Isolation”.... 1 part six seasons gin, 1 part muddled feijoas, lime juice and honey.. strain muddled juice and pour over gin and ice and consume immediately, followed by another, and another.... ad infinitum 😉 🍸

Finally nailed it! Only took half a decade with a few years off in between.. the Float Test - who knew 🤷‍♀️

Alfred on the brownie job... made with spent sourdough starter - less wastage (although then more to eat, will have to freeze some).

My quickest throw-it-all-in veggie breakfast hash!! Almost everything from my fruit and veggie box that I am even more eternally flipping grateful for lately!! Finely chopped onion 🧅 and Russian garlic 🧄 thrown in a pan with loads of olive oil and diced green peppers 🌶 (capsicum), sliced mushroom and finely chopped kale 🥬 in last, stir for a few mins then make a hole in the middle and crack in an egg 🥚 when it’s cooked, chuck it all on the plate with loads of your favourite hot sauce and gobble!! Done and dusted in 10 mins!

Sadly, I’m not on a plane to cook for a wedding in The Bay of Islands in NZ right now... all Australian guests and the cook (moi), cannot go for the obvious travel restrictions now in place.
I’m really disappointed but clearly happy to do the right thing to “flatten the curve”... instead I get a work-free week to hang with the wild angles on the mudflats and cloud spot.
Take care all, wash your hands with soap and water, be thoughtful and considerate, watch more puppy videos and remember; if you run out of bog roll you could always just have a shower?! EJ 😘

Life takes many twists and turns and wading my way through divorce these last few years has led me to finding my peace in clay. Mindfulness. Making simple pieces that will serve my family, (or decorate my garden as shards of broken....), letting go of my need for things to look “better” and embracing imperfection, a LOT of imperfection 😂 but I like what I’ve made and I find it bemusing that these pieces could be around for literally thousands of years; ashes to ashes, dust to dust... endings and beginning again. ..
