Some of the best wine stories begin long before the first vine is planted.
This week we visited in West Ilsley, Berkshire — a third-generation family farm where tradition, farming, and English wine come together beautifully.
Founded on land that has been farmed by the Carlisle family for generations, the vineyard forms part of a wider story that began with their grandfather Norman in 1969. Today, that legacy continues through a new generation, crafting wines that celebrate British farming, family, and the Berkshire countryside.
As Berkshire is our home county and the headquarters of Sips & Nibbles, it's always particularly special to discover incredible local producers right on our doorstep. We often talk about travelling the world through wine, but sometimes the most exciting discoveries can be found just a few miles from home.
Walking through the vines, hearing the family's story, and tasting the wines was a reminder of why we love what we do.
The three wines we tasted were all incredibly impressive, each showcasing a different side of what English wine can achieve. However, the standout for us was undoubtedly their Bacchus — vibrant, expressive, and packed with the fresh aromatic character that has made this grape one of England's signature varieties.
Not because they're the biggest. Not because they're the most famous.
But because every bottle has a genuine connection to the people and place behind it.
English wine continues to go from strength to strength, and Rowles is a fantastic example of the passion, ambition, and quality helping put Berkshire wines on the map.
