Our Story
Hipmatic was hooked to club culture the moment he first set foot into night club “Unverschaemt” in his hometown Freiburg, Germany, at the age of 17. That night in 1990, hearing „Crazy“ from Seal on a club sound system was a life-changing experience. Hipmatic witnessed the advent of the Techno genre first-hand as a regular punter in legendary club OKTAN (Emmendingen/Germany) from 1992-1997. A deep passion for electronic dance music drew him to the dancefloors of countless clubs around Europe, and to key events such as Love Parade Berlin, Street Parade Zurich and quite possibly to one or the other illegal outdoor rave in the countryside. After an era of rigorous clubbing it was a logical progression to get behind the decks himself. In his new hometown Wellington, New Zealand, hipmatic played venues such as Curve Bar/Meow, Sub Nine, Sandwiches, Good Luck, Bar Medusa/Valhalla, Betty’s and Basement Bar. He was booked on club nights “Mi Casa Su Casa”, „What Happened To The Techno“, „Noir Desir“ and „Emergence“. He had guest appearances on RadioActive shows „The Floor“ with DJ Coda and „The Housing Project“ with Iain C. Hipmatic played supporting sets for events headlined by international acts Robert Babicz aka Rob Acid, Âme, Recloose as well as Derrick May. His strictly underground sound is strongly influenced by German labels and producers and features deep and tech house with forays into minimal, vocal/disco house, techno and others.
