Indulge me for a moment , it's the closed season and I get involved with the set up and promotion of Writtle Jazz Festival, an event that started with a few hundred people enjoying a couple of days of live music on the village green that has now become an event attended by a thousand plus visitors.

This years incredible line up includes, Guthrie Govan - in many people's eyes, the world's best guitarist. Don't take my word for it. look him up on You Tube. Paul Higgs - Trumpet player, former musical director of the Royal Shakespeare Company alongside dozen's of world class musicians who've trod the boards of legendary London music venue 'Ronnie Scott's' and like previous Jazz Festival attendees have played with or alongside some of the biggest names in music. (Weller, Beyonce, Olly Murs, Robbie Williams, Jools Holland, Hans Zimmer, Craig David, Tom Jones, Desmond Dekker ...the list goes on.

Kicking off on Friday evening with a classical concert followed on Saturday night with covers band FUNK2K and finishing the all dayer on Sunday evening with 10 piece collective, the Brit Funk Association it's the best line up of world class musicians to assemble in this part of town for many a year.

Thin edge of the wedge? Special rules apply when it comes to staging boxing matches, as Goodison Park did when Tony Bellew fought there in 2016.

Professional boxing must be conducted solely under the auspices of the British Boxing Board of Control. Amateur boxing/Olympic boxing will be conducted under the auspices of the Amateur Boxing Association of England.

According to Liverpool Council, any other form of classification of boxing (including for the avoidance of doubt white collar boxing) or wrestling which does not fall within the category of professional boxing or amateur boxing/Olympic boxing may be provided subject to the requirement to produce the necessary notifications and risk assessments and the involvement of and approval from the governing body if applicable.

World Boxing to introduce mandatory s*x testing for all boxers
May 30, 2025

World Boxing will introduce mandatory s*x testing, to determine the eligibility of male and female athletes that want to take part in its competitions. The introduction of mandatory testing will be part of a new policy on “Sex, Age and Weight” to ensure the safety of all participants and deliver a competitive level playing field for men and women.

The policy is in the final stages of development and has been crafted by a specially convened Working Group of the World Boxing Medical and Anti-Doping Committee, which has examined data and medical evidence from an extensive range of sources and consulted widely with other sports and experts across the world.

In light of plans to introduce this policy and the particular circumstances surrounding some boxers that competed at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, World Boxing has written to the Algerian Boxing Federation to inform it that Imane Khelif will not be allowed to participate in the female category at the Eindhoven Box Cup or any World Boxing event until Imane Khelif undergoes s*x testing.

This decision reflects concerns over the safety and wellbeing of all boxers, including Imane Khelif, and aims to protect the mental and physical health of all participants in light of some of the reactions that have been expressed in relation to the boxer’s potential participation at the Eindhoven Box Cup.

A bridge too far?
Whilst technology takes over everything we do are tournament restrictions placed on 'non coaches' going to effect young boxers pre-bout wellbeing?

England Boxings removal of Lanyards in favour of QR codes signals a further tightening up and policing of access to coaching areas. Whilst there are many good reasons for doing so is it good practice to leave 'Little Johnny' on his own in the dressing room whilst his coaches are cornering their other boxers, his father unable to offer some company and support to calm first bout nerves?
