First, THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to send recommendations, tag photographers, share portfolios, and support my search on behalf of one of my wedding planning clients. The response was overwhelming in the best way possible—over 200 comments!
One thing this experience reminded me of is how powerful word-of-mouth referrals still are. In a world full of ads and algorithms, people continue to trust the recommendations of friends, family, past clients, and colleagues. It's a testament to the importance of not only producing quality work, but also providing an exceptional customer experience. Your reputation truly matters.
As a planner, I went through every recommendation. I liked pages, saved contacts, reviewed portfolios, and added many talented professionals to my growing vendor network. Even when a conversation doesn't immediately turn into a booking, please know that doesn't mean the door is closed. Planners have the responsibility of balancing many factors—including style, personality, availability, and perhaps most importantly, budget. Sometimes a vendor is perfect for one client but not the right fit for the next. Relationships matter, and today's inquiry could easily become tomorrow's referral.
For couples currently planning a wedding, one major takeaway is this: wedding photography is truly an investment. In reviewing the Grand Rapids market, I found full-service photography packages ranging from around $1,200 on the lower end to well over $13,000 on the high end. Capturing and preserving the memories of your wedding day is one of the most important decisions you'll make, and understanding the market can help set realistic expectations when creating your budget.
My hope is that sharing this experience helps both clients and vendors better understand one another. To the photographers and creatives who shared their work—thank you for what you do. To the couples planning their big day—keep asking questions, doing your research, and investing where it matters most to you.
Community over competition. Always. ❤️
