Save your buds.

Save your buds.

Saving peony buds in the refrigerator for up to 3 months — It’s that time of year again when the peonies are starting to bloom! Did you know it’s easy to save peony buds for up to 3 months for blooms later? Here’s how to do it—Just as the buds are starting to show color at the top and feel like a marshmallow, cut the stems, strip leaves to reduce water loss and snuggly wrap in a dry paper towel before wrapping in plastic wrap/plastic bags/newspaper (stem to bud making sure everything is covered). Then you simply place the buds horizontally in the refrigerator up to three months for use later. Note you should not place them near any fruit in the refrigerator as ripe fruit emits ethylene gas, which can accelerate the aging process. When you’re ready to use the flowers, remove from the refrigerator, cut the stems at an angle to the appropriate length, put them in a vase of room temperature water and they will soon open. This technique is such a simple way to enjoy these beauties well beyond their regular blooming time in the garden. Photos by Dickie Chick Gardening

About Alice’s Table

The mission of Alice’s Table is to take lifestyle blogs off the screen and into reality, giving women the opportunity to tap into their creative sides. Our events are hosted at private homes as well as in top local restaurants and bars, offering a girls' night out or in with an artful twist. We’ve been featured on Chronicle, in Boston Magazine as well as recently named Improper Bostonian’s 2016 Best Boozy Class and one of Boston Globe’s best new services for 2016. During our events, you and your guests will learn the art of flower arranging together, either in a venue of your choice (we can help you choose) or in your home. Guests love the chance to catch up with friends while enjoying specialty cocktails and learning something creative to boot. Plus – getting to take home a beautiful bouquet in a new vase never hurts! Our events are a perfect way to bring friends together, whether it be for a birthday party, baby shower, book club, or even just a fun spin on girls’ night in. The options really are endless! Events are not only fun, but easy to host as well! We will bring everything to you and walk you and your guests through the flower arranging process, complete with some expert tips along the way. And don’t worry about a mess – we make sure to handle clean up too! If you’re interested in discussing this further, please let me know a time that is good for you to either meet in person or chat on the phone.
